I haven't looked at early LBs very much in this draft. Is this a guy who would fit well as an ILB in a 3-4?

Whether he does or doesn’t, we aren’t switching to a 3-4. To spend a first on a LB would make no sensefiestavike wrote: ↑Sat Apr 11, 2020 3:12 amI haven't looked at early LBs very much in this draft. Is this a guy who would fit well as an ILB in a 3-4?

It would be interesting to consider how the Vikings might approach this draft if they make a switch to a 3-4, or even plan to include it as a significant wrinkle. What do you guys think?

Re: Linebackers in draft
Mike zimmer has ran this same defense for the last 20 years. Does anyone really believe we’ll switch to a 3-4 now just because Dom Capers is there? I’d bet my life they don’t. Some wrinkles? Sure. But a switch? Not a chance. Either way I don’t think it will have much effect on the draftfiestavike wrote: ↑Sat Apr 11, 2020 8:11 am It would be interesting to consider how the Vikings might approach this draft if they make a switch to a 3-4, or even plan to include it as a significant wrinkle. Re: Linebackers in draft
there is an article at the Daily Norseman, discussing a slight shift in the style of 4-3, that I found interesting (see link below). I agree with PHP I just can't see Zim doing something as dramatic as switching to a 3-4, but something like this, to better utilize players like Barr and Hunter, seems plausible
thoughts?

Thanks for sharing! Its a lot more fun to discuss this kind of thing rather than just trying to slam one another and look for ways to shut the conversation down...Its not like we have anything better to do on the sports horizon than talk about this kind of stuff anyway.VikingPaul73 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 11, 2020 11:31 am there is an article at the Daily Norseman, discussing a slight shift in the style of 4-3, that I found interesting (see link below). Re: Linebackers in draft
Agreed
I think the writer could be onto something, especially the way the 49ers ran the ball down the Vikings throat. Would be interesting to see how they’d do against the run with a little more beef on the strong side.
My question though is what about teams like saints who are always in 3WR sets? They would need 2 pass rushing threats at DE against teams like that
Maybe they could run their old style against teams like the saints and use Ife who might struggle against the run , and use Watts/Stephen against teams like the 49ers??
Versatility is the key I suppose

Re: Linebackers in draft
Love the versatility idea. It might be tough to get outside the base scheme this year given they may not have ANY preseason! Otherwise, having the personnel to switch it up depending on matchups, or even snap by snap could be a real advantage.VikingPaul73 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 11, 2020 12:27 pm Agreed![]()

Re: Linebackers in draft
Who was slammed? I’m all for discussing wrinkles in the defense but to continue to repeat a possible switch to a 3-4, am I not allowed to say it’s not going to happen? Of course capers is going to add in some things but if we’re switching to a 3-4, we might as well have hired capers as our DC, not 2 guys that have also coached in this same defense for how many years.fiestavike wrote: ↑Sat Apr 11, 2020 11:36 amThanks for sharing!
