We opened up the offense today with a lot of 3 wr sets. Its no surprise that we looked better. This offense can thrive if we go into 3 WR sets.
We looked good for a half and then went into a conservative mode again in the second half. I think Zimmer has a choke hold on Stefanski and controls everything. The only reason we opened it up today was because some of our best players complained and then he listens, for a half. The game wasn’t put away at halftime by any means. I still have yet to see them let
Cousins audible at the LOS. He’s got 8 years in this league and knows what he’s looking at. You can win games against weaker teams, but we aren’t going anywhere against good teams. Washington would have been a three or four win team without Cousins, but at least Gruden gave Kirk the leeway to audible out of a bad play call, and Gruden was an idiot. I intensely question Zimmer as a coach. We are an 8-8 team at best. We can’t beat better teams without a much better offensive game plan. I think Zimmer is so old school and stubborn, he can’t and won’t change. Stefanski is over his head and drowning.
Hope I’m wrong, but I think we are a team with a lot of talent that will not achieve anything. It’s maddening to me!
I think you’re 110% right when it comes to zimmer controlling stefanski. I think our offense was so basic in the first 4 weeks because stefanski was scared to throw the ball and tick Zim off. Nor do I think they put the time into the pass offense like they did the run offense. Like David Carr said, their pass offense and routes they had WRs running, the constant under center, looked like a high school offense.
Maybe what Diggs and thielen pulled was the right thing to do. I don’t think it was a direct shot at cousins at all. Howie long said the same thing. Why would it be?! These guys had the best years of their career under cousins. They know he can get them the football. I think it was a shot at zimmer and the OCs. They were getting sick or constantly running vs Chicago and obviously put little time into the pass offense that week. Thielen said “you can’t run the ball for 180 yards every week, you need to pass the football”. Maybe that, and Diggs forced them to be like “ok these guys are ticked and need the ball, let’s open it up a bit”.
And I’ve yet to see anyone respond to what I posted a few days ago.....
Since cousins has been a starter in this league, these are what his passing offenses have looked like.....
2015: 11th total pass offense
2016: 2nd total pass offense
2017: 12th total pass offense (Keenums was 11th and Kirk had way less weapons in WAS and a much lesser OC that year and was still 12th)
2018: 13th total pass offense
And then 2019: 31st in passing offense
But guys want to say cousins is the problem? The media and some fans think Thielen and Diggs think cousins is the problem??
No there is a bigger problem. It was addressed by David Carr on nfl network too. Cousins doesn’t just all of the sudden forget how to throw a football, becomes inaccurate in the middle of his career and just throw check downs. The game planning when it comes to this passing offense is as poor as it gets. Sure, cousins should have complete the deep ball to Thielen, thrown the ball out of bounds vs GB, etc. But there is something going on a lot bigger than just him. It looks like these OCs invested days at a time into this run offense but put way less into the pass. Carr already called them out for it. And I think Diggs and thielen lit a fire under these coaches rear.
But in the end, yeah you’re right, I think Zim wanted a puppet to control in stefanski and go back to 1980 football. I think Flip was still terrible and wrong not finding ways to use cook and refusing to run the ball. But these guys have been just as bad and are doing the complete opposite of what flip did instead of doing what they should have done and meet in the middle and balance the offense. They did it today. I hope to god they continue to do this and invest more time into this pass offense. Given who we have a RB and who we have at WR, there is ZERO reason this offense shouldn’t be balanced. Cousins can sling it, let him. Play to the strengths of your team. Not just the strength of your RB
Today’s game was perfect because they got cousins out of the pocket away from an often collapsing OL and allowed him to see the field. Throwing 27 passes and completing 22 for over 300 yards. The handed Dalvin the ball 21 times and also had him heavily involved in the pass game, and we played good defense. THAT is the recipe for success. Pat shurmur proves that. Zim should know that and needs to let these OCs do what they need to do to balance this offense because it can be damn good
