2011 NFL Draft- Vikings took Christian Ponder who many thought was a 2nd round prospect.80 PurplePride 84 wrote:There's rarely a consensus. Every team has their board. All it takes it one team
How often do we see WTF picks in round one. Dallas took Travis Frederick in the 1st last year and the consensus was he was a 3rd round prospect.
You also almost always see that one player who's ranked in the Top 100 on Mayock or Kiper's board still on the board in like the 5th round.
If teddy is there at #8 do you take him now?

You mistake the real reason they're on the job. It's not so much about nailing which prospects will be studs and duds but just overall hyping the crap out of the draft to build excitement. Mayock who I respect a lot when it comes to almost anything football, will pretty much praise 95% of picks tomorrow and show you 5-7 clips of them at their best making a big play while keeping the negative's to a minimum.Dirtyswabby wrote:
I guess this is the point im trying to make. We have no idea what the coach's and GM's big boards look like, and I don't think they are going to tip their hands to the analysts. Last year the Analysts got blown out of the water, so many of them were horribly wrong on draft day im surprised some of them still have jobs.
The problem is, to us average fans and even the espn draft "specialists" that may be true, but to Spielman and the professional scouts, there may only be 1 or possibly 2 guys they'd feel comfortable about getting. So if we like Teddy, and Manziel and Bortles are there, but we don't particularly want Manziel or Bortles, it doesn't do us much good to say "well there's still 3 QB's around that Mel Kiper likes so we can draft something else!"radar55 wrote:
I understand our need to get a QB but all of the QB's coming out have issues (depending on who you talk to) so there really is not one that can be considered better than another and when picking in the top ten I would rather not reach (AGAIN) when there are other positions of need that can be filled with players that are more likely to pan out as top 10 talent than the QB's available. just my opinion.
Of course you could "risk it" and maybe the one guy we like will still be there, but it may not be as deep to the actual professionals on who they'd like to pick, compared to how it looks to us.

Pre-draft Andy Dalton: 6'2/215, 4.87, 29.5" vert, 4.27 shuttle, 9.5" hands. Bridgewater: 6'2/214, 4.79, 30" vert, 4.20 shuttle, 9.25" hands

I agree. In fact, I keep looking for more objective analysis of these QB prospects and I just don't see much of it. For example, what exactly is the correlation between a QB's height and/or weight and his overall success, both in college and in the pros? I see so many people concerned with both Manziel's and Bridgewater's height and/or weight, but those sure didn't seem to hold back either one in college, and there are plenty of examples of pros who have thrived despite not being ideal physical specimens.Purple bruise wrote:Pre-draft Andy Dalton: 6'2/215, 4.87, 29.5" vert, 4.27 shuttle, 9.5" hands. This is sans the fact that Dalton never once threw for over 3000 yards, never had a 71% completion rate, and Dalton played in the spread... Not to mention, Dalton's arm is weaker than Teddy's.Purple bruise wrote:Pre-draft Andy Dalton: 6'2/215, 4.87, 29.5" vert, 4.27 shuttle, 9.5" hands. I stand by the standard dogma that at the end of the day there is no foolproof way to judge QBs. Who is to say that in 5 years we won't be wishing we took McCarron or Garropollo vs. Manziel or Bridgewater? Nobody really knows whether it be someone on this board or an NFL GM.
That being said, if they want to create a Franchise that wins consistently over along period of time, then they need to find a long term solution at QB. To me that means they will take somebody at some point. Spielman and Zimmer both know that ultimately their jobs depend on finding someone at QB.

Still a big believer in Teddy and I would be fine and satisfied if they got him at 8, but I feel like if he falls out of the top ten then he probably falls out of the first round. Having said that...Defense and trade back into the 1st or up in the 2nd round to get Teddy.

Dalton's stats were very impresive so do not dismiss them so easily:
Dalton holds school career records for wins (42), touchdown passes (71), passing yards (10,314), pass attempts (1,317), completions (812), and completion percentage (61.6). He also holds single-season records for touchdown passes (27), set in the 2010 season; and attempts (371), set in the 2007 season. He also holds the single game record for highest completion percentage, 91.3 percent, which was set against Baylor in 2010. Dalton is also the MWC career leader in total offense (11,925 yards) and plays from scrimmage (1,730).[9]
