I hadn't seen this article when I put my notes together. Looks like Arif and I saw some of the same things. His write-up on ISM is spot on. If he really wanted to get a chance to get on the field more, ISM would be really focused on the craft of returning punts and kicks. I'm left wondering if he thinks that's below him, or he just isn't good at it. You can see the talent, so it's a bit frustrating.makila wrote: ↑Sun Aug 21, 2022 12:13 pm Looks like you hit the ones the Athletic did. I didn't see any of the game, relegated to just reading.
Ihmir Smith-Marsette, returner
The Vikings clearly see all-world potential in Smith-Marsette, and they clearly want to unleash that potential in as many ways as possible. As one of the best special teamers in the Big Ten over the past several years, it makes sense that they think they can get a lot out of him in that area. But he’s been a liability as a returner both receiving punts and kickoffs. He’s dropped returns of both types throughout practices and in the game.
Dropping a kickoff isn’t as bad because it generally turns into a touchback, but dropping punts – or fumbling them – is a good deal worse. Smith-Marsette definitely has value to add to the roster but the Vikings are trying to force him into something he can’t do. It’s time to explore other options.

The good thing is Ingram made some good blocks. Kinlaw who is having a great camp beat him with a new move for the sack. “Javon Kinlaw unveiled a new inside pass-rush move which he used to beat backup guard Ed Ingram and sack backup quarterback Kellen Mond. I saw a rep from practice and Kinlaw ran over J Davis and put him on his back. It's like he wasn't even there. Being weak up the middle is not a good thing.Texas Vike wrote: ↑Sun Aug 21, 2022 11:45 am Rising stock
T.Y. McGill continues to look fantastic at Nose Tackle. The guy has 4 sacks, tons of pressure, caused a fumble as SF was about to score a TD. He's a workhorse with a great motor, some heft to him, and surprising speed. He's been on 8 teams in 8 years? How does he look so good, given that journeyman history? The guy is a revelation and is a front-runner for Mr. Mankato (if he qualifies; he may have too much experience)
Akayleb Evans had a great night at CB. He was solid in coverage and generally stood out in a good way. He caused a fumble in the red zone too.
Up and Down
Ihmer Smith-Marsette made some nice catches and is showing signs of improving his craft at WR. He gets open and catches the ball. He celebrates too much for my liking and he inspires little confidence as a punt returner, losing a fumble on one and dropping the opening kickoff as well (minor and unimportant, but still... catch the damn ball!).
QB2 position If Cousins were to get hurt, our season would nose-dive. Neither Mond nor Mannion is really good enough to lead us to victories. Mond shows flashes. He made some great throws. He moves in the pocket well and is elusive. Great arm strength on some throws. His brain is his weakest link so far: he looks slow to process and makes poor choices, appearing to make his mind up pre-snap and thus make throws into terrible spots. "Mannion has a calming presence" is something we heard from Pete Bercich (who is a great announcer, BTW). While I think that's true, I continue to see mediocrity from him.
Ed Ingram. He made some great blocks, like the one that led to our lone TD. He also got beat for a sack and did a poor job of blocking on a screen play in the first half. SF was getting good pressure up the middle early, which is a concern once again.
Not good
Andrew Booth Jr. injured his ankle on a non-contact play and was ruled out for the rest of the game. He didn't look good coming off, as he was unable to put weight on his leg.
Zach Davidson had a horrible drop on a pass from Mannion that hit him in stride in the hands and that would have gone for 30-40 yards. We feel thin at TE.
Myron Mitchell was similarly unable to hold onto well placed balls (one in the red zone from Mond would have helped down the stretch).
Anything I missed?
Great recap for a very boring game.Texas Vike wrote: ↑Sun Aug 21, 2022 11:45 am Rising stock

We all knew Mannion stinks. He fills a position if Cousins gets hurt. He would be lucky to win one game.VikingsFan84 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 20, 2022 9:10 pm Mond is terrible, threw 2 interceptions, Mannion is not much better, it is too bad Vikings do not have a good back up to rely on if Cousins goes down
They already know what Hunter, H. Smith, Z Smith,Hendricks, cook can do. Get a better look at those you want to get a better look them under gametime experience.StanM wrote: ↑Sun Aug 21, 2022 10:09 am I changed channels after the first half. This new regime has a different approach to pre-season. They sit the starters and use the entire game to evaluate players. It’s hard to take what I watched last night and apply it to what we will have in the regular season.
Teams still have a bunch of players to cut and will be determining their practice squads. Half the players we cussed for whiffing on plays Saturday night will be gone. Sometimes it’s better to sit back and let the process happen without over thinking it. Even the backup QB’s should do better playing with starting line, back and receivers plus an actual game plan instead of a week of scrimmage against the 9’ers.
