MONDay, MONDay, Will he be all we hope he can be

Post by VikingTom »

Little play on an old Mamas and Papas song.

I remain intrigued by Mond. He would seem to have some tools, and may have landed in the best place for him to develop without pressure. Cousins at least outwardly is willing to mentor him. We will see in a couple years how this goes. While waiting it is worth noting that by not moving up to get Fields the Vikings were able to solidify the O line. Which will ultimately benefit both Cousins and Mond should he progress as hoped.

I see Pierce has a calf injury that hopefully will only keep him out of practice for a short time. Have not heard more on Twyman. Beyond that I think everyone is coming into camp in good shape. Well nearly everyone, there is a court date to be dealt with, and his fate remains unknown at this time.

Anyone else with news?

I am excited for training camp. Last year was soooooooo disappointing.

Mond seems like a solid prospect for top of the third round QB. Could he turn into a legit starter? I put the chance of that at around 33%.

He is the future of the franchise at the moment and we finally have a good reason to watch pre season games again. Hopefully he doesn't get buried behind Stanley and the other guy who doesn't matter and we get to see a lot of him this off season.

I'm excited too. Hopefully this year will herald a return to relevance for the team. I'm looking for big years from Cook, Jefferson, Irv Smith, and Cousins. Having a rested and healthy Hunter, Pierce, Tomlinson, and Kendricks should help as well. Lots of reasons to be optimistic, and just a few to be worried.

Mond is an intriguing prospect. I'm happy he can sit and learn and develop behind Cousins rather than be fed to the lions (literally?) like a lot of his contemporaries who were drafted in the 1st round are going be. He has some good tools to work with. Maybe Zimmer can find ways to get him on the field this year in game situations. At least we have an exciting young QB prospect on the roster. It's been a while since we had that.

Legit starter don't mean the same to all. For example some felt Case was legit including Elway. Even Joe Webb and TJack seemed legit to some. Some feel Kirk is legit others don't. See how grey that gets. We need a HOFer with a Super Bowl win. Basically a clone of Rodgers. I would put that at .000000001% and even that may be too gracious.

Case was quite legit for one season. TJack was OK. Joe Webb was never a legit starter. We don't need a HOFer, but it would be nice to have.

The QB situation behind Cousins is not the only interesting battle to watch. RB depth will be interesting. Abdullah may find himself on the outside looking in. Kene Nwangwu, and A.J. Rose may well push him off the end of the depth chart. K Nwangwu in particular may have a leg up due to his potential as a more electric return guy.

Abdullah is a big reason we were terrible in KO returns and he adds little in the run game. Time to finally move on from the "safe" RB and KO return option and go with guys with actual upside.

I'm still scratching my head about how Nwangwu wasn't more productive in college given his athletic abilities. He seems like a guy who should have gotten the chance to be a featured back in college, and yet he didn't stand out statistically. Did his coaches just not give him the chance? Or was he given the chance and he's just a guy who looks good in terms of measurables but it doesn't translate to the field?

Hopefully he can demonstrate he was just overlooked. I was surprised the Vikings spent a draft pick on him given the lack of any pre-draft hype around him and thought they could easily have targeted him as a rookie free agent signing. Someone in the scouting department must have really liked what he saw when he went down to Iowa to scout.

I think there's at least one or two forum members familiar with the Iowa State program so they can probably shed better light but a lot of it had to do with David Montgomery and Breece Hall. Even so, you would think a guy with those types of measurables would be more involved but he did have a pair of very good RBs in front of him.

Through homer glasses, I want to see the next Terrell Davis. He had no college production to speak of, was buried on the depth chart, and turned out pretty good.
