Oh I am not blaming him. I think he is very smart when it comes to maximizing his value. I will, however, blame the Vikings management if they allow him to hold all the leverage when his contract is up. At least have someone waiting in the wings who might develop into something. It isn't Mannion that's for sure.

Yeah, people thought he might give us a deal and there is nothing in his past to indicate he would be willing to do so. The guy has bet on himself time and time again, and while that betting on himself hasn't turned into success on the field, it has gotten him A LOT of money. I wish I could do the same at my job. Do just enough to not get fired and get a massive raise because my boss is afraid of taking a chance on a young pup out of college.

KC managed to get their QBOTF drafting 27th. Baltimore traded up to get their's at 32 after using their 1st on a TE.

If the Vikings don't seriously consider a QB in this draft, they will be in desperation mode for a QB. Whether that desperation leads to them extending Cousins or drafting a guy in 2021, it is not a good place to be.

I have said it once, I will say it again, and again and again. The Vikings should only extend Cousins if they think he can win them a SB. Not because he is the best QB available that year, or because they are scared of drafting his replacement or because he is safe. If he is a guy who elevates the team significantly, extend him, if not do whatever it takes to find that guy.

Ideally, if the Vikings don't find their guy in this year's draft, they let Kirk play out his final year where I believe 8-8 is the ceiling, sign him to a reasonable 2 year deal (20 million per with very little in guarantees) and then you are not desperate for a QB, not locked into an average QB making way too much money and can move on when you finally do find that guy in the draft you like.

That could be exactly what the Vikings are offering Cousins and that could be why he is turning them down. We will see.

We may as well stop following the Vikings if they are that dumb. That they even tried to extend him is dumb. Maybe now they can trade him to someone who will give him a big longterm deal and he'll be as happy to go as I'll be to see him go?

Here's what else this means. The Wilfs have hitched their wagon to Rick Spielman, and by extension Mike Zimmer. They're true believers.

Here's the math, as it seems to work out.

The NFL.com report says the new deal frees up $10 million in cap space this year. The first deal was $84 million guaranteed, with $31 million left to pay this year. So they're effectively on the hook for $76 million in 2021 and 2022, meaning he'll probably have a whopping salary cap hit the last year of the deal. Wouldn't be surprised if it's in the neighborhood of $36 million for 2021 and $40 million for 2022. Nice gig if you can get it.

My hope in all this is that with the new CBA and a greater portion of revenue (as much as 48.5% as opposed to the 47% under the old CBA) going to the players, the cap will go up, as well. But even with that, we'll be in absolute cap hell come 2022.

And just when I was about to say I hope they draft and develop Jalen Hurts.

Hurts went from one of the faces of college football the past four years to NFL draft underdog the minute Oklahoma’s season ended in the national semis. Hurts progressed as a passer during his time in Tuscaloosa and Norman, but he has looked different in the first two stages of the pre-draft process. Hurts was under siege against constant pressure during the Senior Bowl, but he threw a TD on a perfectly placed vertical route at the end of fourth quarter and followed up a solid overall week in Mobile with a very impressive throwing session at the combine. I have seen Hurts play many times in person over the years, and he’s never thrown the ball with the confidence or command that he did in Indy. Hurts started the pre-draft process as a fourth-rounder on most teams’ boards, and there’s a chance now that he goes in the late second. The Dak Prescott comparisons are real.

Hurts has been widely regarded as one of the smartest quarterbacks in college football and one of the best leaders. If he's actually backing that up with passing skills, I'd love to see him in Minnesota.

I always knew the rejection on extensions was bogus. This is a pretty good deal for a top 10 QB in the current market. Cousins I think was the #5 QB this past season.
