Trae Waynes w/ #11? CB ranking's
Good morning all!
So i have been doing alot of simulations with fanspeak (usually only the first three rounds) and every time I enter the second round I am constantly seeing every corner available (minus Trae Waynes and Marcus Peters and sometimes Jalen Collins).
Even though i have my heart set on getting an awesome corner with the #11 pick (Waynes)- is it worth to wait until the second round with guys like Kevin Johnson from Wake Forest or Eric Rowe any other corner which might drop to us?
I know Waynes is #1 for a reason but with Mike Zimmer's eye for defense i wonder if he plans on going another direction to really up the defense this year for instance...
(first round)- Landon Collins- S (I really like the tape on this guy)
(second round)- Kevin Johnson- CB
(third)- best offensive linemen available
this would put our defense on a new level i think but i do hate not giving Teddy enough supporting cast. With these simulations though Scherff isn't available 60% of the time.
Odds are we probably will have multiple first round picks knowing Rick Speilmen- which i wont waste my time on because possibilities are endless due to possible Peterson trade.
I really would like to bolster the offensive line (i know a 3rd round pick might not be enough). Anyways what are your thoughts concerning CB's

Re: Trae Waynes w/ #11? CB ranking's
Howdy!
I'd branch out with your simulations and mocks. I can't imagine there's any way Waynes lasts until R2 and it's even more far-fetched to believe no corner will go in R1. Either there's a glitch or something is terribly wrong. It's just improbable. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if at least three corners are off the board in the first round.
Regarding whether it's worth to wait until the second round, that's hard to say. It really depends on the Vikings' board and who's available. I, for one, am not sold on Waynes and put him much closer to the other group of talented corners (Johnson, Peters, Collins, Jones) than all alone at the top with some space between. I have a lot of questions and think there are others that may fit Zimmer's scheme a bit better with better recognition and ball skills. I can't imagine Kevin Johnson will be available in round 2, but I'd be ecstatic if we selected him there (I'm a big fan of his).
Unfortunately I also am not sold on Landon Collins and would be disappointed if we selected him at 11.
Personally I don't think it's essential to draft a corner in round 1. I do think it's a need, but the unit fared reasonably well last season despite a down year from Munnerlyn (I also think Josh Robinson had a bit better year than some give him credit for and I think can still improve). We also helped our depth by signing Newman. But you can never have enough good corners and I wouldn't object to one being selected with our first pick. Most analysts have narrowed down the Vikings' first pick to a corner or linebacker, but we'll have to see. A lot depends on how the top-10 actually shakes out but I know the Vikings have been linked to most (if not all) the top-ranked corners. I think they recognize the need there so I'd be surprised if we walked out of the third round without one. Personally, I'm hoping for a Mariota slide and to trade down if one of the top-7-8 guys are gone.
As far as the corners go, my top-5 rankings for the Vikings presently look like this:
1. Kevin Johnson
2. Marcus Peters
3a. Trae Waynes
3b. Byron Jones
3c. Jalen Collins
Admittedly, I've watched the least on Jalen Collins.
Much will also depend on the status of Peterson. If he's traded, RB suddenly becomes more of a priority.
Unfortunately the Vikings have a lot of needs and not enough draft picks to fill them all, and I would hope Rick understands the offensive line is one of the highest priorities. The good news is starting QB no longer seems like an obvious need, which is especially good considering this year's QB class. Only a couple more weeks until the draft!

If we deal Peterson I want either Melvin Gordon or Jay Ajayi ....
Our OL has to be better .. We can't get Teddy hurt and need solid lanes to run in

I would add Coleman in there as well. Just ran a 4.3-4.4 at his personal pro dayjackal wrote:If we deal Peterson I want either Melvin Gordon or Jay Ajayi ....

I really don't want coleman. He reminds me of a McFadden , fast straight forward runner, from what I have seen he does not have many moves to shake tacklers. I want Gordon, not only do I think he is a great runner, I think he has great vision, great hands, and is A beast on picking up a blitz.
Secondly I would take Gurley. He is probably the best RB in the field but his injury puts a ? Into the scenario, I think mckinnon would be fine filling in until he is good to go.

I feel like he only reminds you of McFadden because that is just who he was compared to. McFadden was a good RB that was injury prone and was stuck on a bad team. Coleman is one of the most explosive backs in this draft. I would take him in a heartbeatNorv Zimmer wrote:I really don't want coleman. Re: Trae Waynes w/ #11? CB ranking's
I really, really, really hope we pass on Trae Waynes at number 11. I don't think he is all he is hyped up to be. HIs hips are stiff. His competition wasn't spectacular. He was placed in a good defensive system.
I wouldn't be mad if we traded down and took him, but I don't think Trae Waynes is a top 10 or top 15 player.

Not sure where that analysis comes from but I guess we're entitled to our opinionHardcoreVikesFan wrote:I really, really, really hope we pass on Trae Waynes at number 11. I think Tre Waynes is the best CB, but I also wouldn't mind moving back a little bit and getting some picks...I really, really, really hope we pass on Trae Waynes at number 11. I think we could still land him or Collins and get more picks

Re: Trae Waynes w/ #11? CB ranking's
While he may be the best CB in the draft, is he the best CB for the Vikings? Does he fit the type of player we need for that position. I am sick of picking a player and trying to make them fit into the role. I would rather they trade down than pick a player who will not work in the system they have put out there. The Bleacher Report article posted by dead_poet, is a good one to read on the subject.jackal wrote: I think Tre Waynes is the best CB, but I also wouldn't mind moving back a little bit and getting some picks...

I agree with him fitting Zimmer's system. I am not against Tre Waynes at all. more quality players(I.E. New England Method) IMO we could use a few extra guys in this draft.

Re: Trae Waynes w/ #11? CB ranking's
I am all for grabbing a CB in the 1st 2 rounds.
There are a lot of really good players at the position. Not sure Waynes is THAT much better than Jones, Peters, PJ Williams, Collins, and a list that goes on for awhile.
I would like to find a difference maker at 11, Beasley, Dupree, Scherff, Shelton.
Then with Spielman's ability to move around, maybe target a CB at the end of rd 1.
There seems to be some talented 2nd round LBers available, thus not needing to really reach for a guy.

Re: Trae Waynes w/ #11? CB ranking's
Does anyone know off hand what it would take for a team picking from the 25-30 range to trade us our #11 pick? If we were to do so and land lets say #27 plus 2nd and 3rd round picks, I'd be all for it. Chances are, the "best" CB and offensive lineman will be gone by 11, so why not stockpile. We could pick a corner at #27, and RB, OL, WR, LB could follow suite in the next 4 picks.
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

Re: Trae Waynes w/ #11? CB ranking's
Based off what I understand, in order to move up from 25 to 11 the team would need to make up 530 "points" which is the equivalent of their second-rounder, third-rounder and fourth-rounder or a combination of their second, third, fifth, sixth and seventh. A team further down would need to compensate slightly more. So it's pretty much unlikely, which is why you rarely see such blockbuster trades from teams waaaay down to move that high up. It's a bit easier to swallow year-to-year if you start trading away future picks rather than essentially giving up your entire draft for one player.cmoss84 wrote:Does anyone know off hand what it would take for a team picking from the 25-30 range to trade us our #11 pick?
