Vikings should focus on defense next year?

Post by AllDay »

I think we should, we can net a G in FA and take a WR in the mid rounds.

LB and S are big needs and this class has good depth at each spots.

Guys like Shaq Thompson, Eric Kendricks, Bernadnick McKinney and Denzel Perryman are all guys to consider.

S isn't quite as deep but Landon Collins, Cody Prewitt, Derron Smith and Anthony Harris are guys I like.

I like how this draft falls for us: http://walterfootball.com/draft2015.php

Shaq and Barr would be legendary and we can get Anthony Harris in the 2nd. Thoughts?

I like the idea of building defense. If Zimmer is going to succeed as a Head Coach, it will likely be because he has a stellar defense. I say give him all the tools he needs and see if we can build an all-time defense with an offense that can hold it's own.

Our D is good. Real good, continue to coach them up and get a really good FA or draft spot for LB and CB. Blanton has been improving every game.

If we get another real threat, a good route runner and someone who gets off the bacll quick, we give Teddy another weapon, and he needs one. Jennings is another year older. Who know what we do with CP ) ofc I hope we manage to keep him another year and see him work on his game the offseason). Someone like Cooper is positively the best player we can get with our pick. I am guessing he is going top 5, but maybe Rick will this he is worth it, and pull the trigger to get him. If not, parker is at least as good as Johnson (who would have ever thought Johnson was that good???). And if we get AD back, we don't have to worry about a 1-2 rd. RB. IMO, Asiata, Mckinnon, and Banyard could do the job next year. Asiata isn't Flash, but he is so tough, and has good hands, not many mistakes. But McKinnon should be the feature back.

The defensive needs are there, but I'm really hoping the Vikings work hard on developing a top shelf OL. Everything that happens on offense will improve if they do.

Related: I'm a bit concerned that with all the injuries to the offensive line we haven't seen anything from Yankey. I'm not sure he's even been activated this season. I'm a little disappointed in that, but I suppose leaning on veteran replacements may not be a bad idea if the staff thinks they have a better chance at keeping Teddy alive. I just hope we get more out of Yankey than we did, say, DeGeare.

Shaq Thompson or Myles Jack should be the first two guys the Vikings covet in the 1st round. Instant play makers and difference makers. I would be ecstatic if they added one of the two.

Edit: Jack isn't eligible for the 2015 draft, so Shaq it is. Myles next year.

we need at least 2 OL.....after that, defensive needs would be useful and I am Sure Zim would like to focus on it as that is where he really founded his coaching career. Really, once we get some good OL I have no problem with them taking the best available players in the draft since we do NOT have anybody who is an "untouchable", annual Pro-Bowl, calibre players. Everyone on the team should realize that they are replacable. Fear and job insecurity is a good thing.

They need to go BPA right out of the gates. They'll be picking smack dab in the middle of the 1st round -- you don't want to overextend on an offensive lineman when there will be plenty there in round 2.

As I said in previous threads, it's not very realistic for the Vikings to sign a big name guard or tackle in free agency. Sully, Fusco and Phil all have hefty contracts and Kalil is getting paid top first round pick money. We need to draft a guard no question. We can fork over another $5+ million per year for an offensive lineman. We already have too much money invested. So no we can't get a guard in free agency unless it's a cheap guy for depth purposes. Not a starter though.

Also, I don't think safety is that big of a need anymore. I wouldn't mind taking one later in the draft or something but Blanton and even Sendejo can both get the job done. We have bigger needs than that. Side note, the bust rate for first round safeties as of late has been pretty high.

I'm a huge Denzel Perryman fan and he should be available in round 2 or possibly even 3 based on the combine and pro day. He would be an immediate impact player in Zimmers defense IMO. He's the most sure tackler I've seen coming out of college in a very long time.

Figuring we will have 2 first round picks based on how Spielman likes to trade up I want either LG/WR, LG/CB or CB/WR. Those are our top 3 needs IMO, especially with knowing what is out there for those positions.

I believe I read it was due to his strength. Zimmer mentioned on more than one occasion that he needed to get stronger.

Kalil needs to be cut. His contract size makes it all the more important. He has had plenty of chances to prove himself and failed. The only way I would keep him would be if he took a huge salary cap and became a back up player which will Never happen. He is a waste of a roster space. I garraantee, the last few games of the season he will do JUST enough to make ownership consider giving him "one more year", then come back next year and suck again all season.

I would be ok with the Vikes trading a higher draft choice for an established quality OL

Here's an interesting idea...if AD isn't back (or back at a reduced salary) why not go after Demaryius Thomas.

Well Kaill has played better and is still young. I don't think we should cut him. If we do, that now creates two major holes on the offensive line instead of one. Let him play out his contract. You don't see a lot of high picks get cut before their rookie contract is up. I say give him another year under Norvs scheme and see how it goes

If I'm not mistaken, he's allowed one sack in the past 4 games and that was on a well-constructed stunt run by the Jets. He didn't get beat "straight up". It's a serious exaggeration to suggest he's a waste of roster space.
