Favorite PA blunders
Preseason offers up the full gamut of performances, ranging from excellent to ridiculously pathetic, and not only on the field. Paul Allen has had some absolute classic slip ups in his commentating this preseason. What are your favorites?
A couple I've heard from the first half of the AZ game:
1. (Camera shows a group of adorable 4 and 5 year old girls in Vikings cheerleading outfits) PA: "That's the 2019 Vikings Cheerleader group right there"
Holy Smokes! Somebody tell PA that 10 is a bit young for professional cheerleading.
2. Walsh lines up for a 51 yard FG try. "And it's incomplete... er, it goes off the left upright"
3. "The sun is setting in the West"
4. "The Cardinals are in white pants, white jerseys, with red trim and an angry bird on their helmet..." (which made me ask, "With our without the slingshot image?")

On the other end of the spectrum: Ben Leber's interviews have been excellent this preseason.

Re: Favorite PA blunders
Eh....I'd still prefer PA and this group for regular season games over whatever B or C grade group that FOX will put out there. At least PA, Bercich, and Leber are familiar with the team and it's players.

Do not mistake KINDNESS for WEAKNESS!

Leber and Bercich are good, as I mentioned. This thread is about PA's slip ups. They're hilarious.

?? - I'm not sure I get that one (unless it's because he's overstating the obvious).Texas Vike wrote:Preseason offers up the full gamut of performances, ranging from excellent to ridiculously pathetic, and not only on the field. Classic PA. Radio tendencies make him be super descriptive to help his audience visualize the game. He seems to just go into stream of consciousness-type of narrating where he doesn't even think about what he's saying. It's entertaining, IMO.

"The Score board is only showing 30 points." He didn't realize the extra point was missed. Assumed it was automatic.
Vikings fan since Nov. 6, 1966. Annoying Packer fans since Nov. 7, 1966
Re: Favorite PA blunders
definitely the 109 yard kick. or was it 99
Re: Favorite PA blunders
It is entertaining but since he's doing a radio simulcast for these games, it makes sense for him to keep being so descriptive. I didn't see that one as a slip-up but the incomplete field goal was hilarious, especially because he caught himself saying it and didn't finish. As I was listening to the radio broadcast, that one made me laugh.Texas Vike wrote:Classic PA. Radio tendencies make him be super descriptive to help his audience visualize the game. Overall, I think PA does a fine job but as I'm sure you've noticed, all football broadcasters make some amusing mistakes. It must be hard to try describe something on the fly for 3 hours and not get tongue-tied or have the wrong word come out.
I don't know how hockey play-by-play announcers even do their job. That game moves so fast, and sometimes for such long stretches, that you'd think their tongues would just end up in knots.

Wait, you thought "the sun is setting in the West" was NOT a slip up? That's hilarious! He has this fantastic tendency to state obvious facts as if they were alarming occurrences. Perhaps he clarified to inter-galactic listeners a fact of life on Earth?Mothman wrote: It is entertaining but since he's doing a radio simulcast for these games, it makes sense for him to keep being so descriptive. I understand he's doing a radio broadcast too, but that seems like a poor decision to have him do both simultaneously, since they are such distinct formats with different needs.
No doubt, live commentating is an art and those that do it well have my deep respect. I love PA's homerism and energy. I also enjoy his blunders and was simply looking to compile some here. I don't mean to drag him through the dirt or imply that Joe Buck is any better.
Re: Favorite PA blunders
I got a kick out of (and eventually annoyed by) his struggles with the fact that the Cardinals had both a "Jaron Brown" and a "John Brown" playing wide receiver. Every time he called either of their names, he either pointed out that they also had a guy with the other name, or else you could hear him doing a double-take to make sure he got the name right.

I didn't see it as a slip up because I thought he was just doing what radio broadcasters are trained to do. When I heard him say that, I didn't think he was attaching significance to the location of the sunset, just trying to "paint the picture" for the listening audience.Texas Vike wrote:Wait, you thought "the sun is setting in the West" was NOT a slip up? It cheaper.

No worries. I understood the spirit of what you were doing and I never felt for a moment that you were trying to drag him through the dirt. I wasn't trying to be defensive either, just providing my take on what PA said and then "thinking out loud" about the pitfalls of sports announcing. No doubt, live commentating is an art and those that do it well have my deep respect. I thought it was kind of pedo for him to refer to those young girls as "cherubs" when they showed the shot of the girls dressed up as cheerleaders.
Also I thought Leber's sideline reporting was rough. His questions were way too long and complex, he needs to keep it simpler. And I'm not sure he can remain objective and critical since he'd be criticizing some of his friends/former coworkers by doing so.

HAHAHA "jaron brown, the one with the experience" "john brown the rookie!" uggg lolEli wrote:I got a kick out of (and eventually annoyed by) his struggles with the fact that the Cardinals had both a "Jaron Brown" and a "John Brown" playing wide receiver. My favorite is during the fumble play "And the Minnesota Vikings have won!" as the guy scoops the ball out and his teammate gets a TD.
