Drafting a RB
I think we can all agree that we need to find a 3rd down/Second String back.
The question has been, "big back or scat back".
Since we won't be taking a running back until round 4-5, I think the perfect fit would be Lache Seastrunk. He can be your 3rd down, out of the backfield guy AND he runs between the tackles well if AD gets hurt.
Disclaimer***
I live in Waco and have watched this guy for the past 3 years. I am biased but still think he has all the tools to be explosive at the next level.

Re: Drafting a RB
Two RBs I like from this year:
Tre Mason from Auburn, the guy is a beast but we would probably have to spend a 2nd or 3rd round on him. I don't know if we should go that high for a scat back. But Mason can catch a ball, and from what I seen he's not scare to block. I would say my only knock against him is that he doesn't have that burst of speed at the second level. He's basically a one-speed back but he is still fast though. But like I said, I don't know if the Vikings want to go that high on a back-up but this guy has potential to be a franchise RB once Peterson steps down.
Isaiah Crowell from Alabama State. (my college
) This guy was viewed as one of the best RBs of this year's draft in the beginning some months ago. This guy can really be a steal. He originally went to University of Georgia but got into some trouble. He failed his drug test and charge with two felony accounts of possession of a firearm. Of course he was kicked off the team so eventually he came to Alabama Sate and he looked really good. His off-field record would scare most teams away. He didn't get into any trouble while at Alabama State though. If we can keep his head clean, he would be a very good RB for us.

Re: Drafting a RB
Guys at the RB position to keep an eye on include: Henry Josey (Missouri), Tyler Gaffney (Stanford), De'Anthony Thomas (Oregon), Andre Williams (Boston College), Bishop Sankey (Washington), and Tre Mason (Auburn).
I feel that any of those guys would be good compliments to Adrain. The guy I like the most in this draft is Andre Williams from BC. That dude led the NCAA in rushing and gets no respect.

Re: Drafting a RB
I wonder if getting LaMichael James from SF would be a consideration? He's 3rd on their depth chart and is disgruntled. I'd give up a 5th for him
Pull yr 84 jerseys out.
Re: Drafting a RB
If it were me, would just give a FA out there a small 1 or 2 year contract and be done with it. Or if we are in 5-6th round and one available fits what we are looking for, I wouldn't have a big problem with that either.
But I really think we could get some depth/developmental guys late in the draft that can still contribute. Maybe one of those guys is a RB.

I agree. I think we should not look to draft a RB any higher than round 5 or so. We have way too many holes on both sides of the ball.KSViking wrote:If it were me, would just give a FA out there a small 1 or 2 year contract and be done with it. Re: Drafting a RB
I'd take a RB in the 4th round if the right 3rd down pass catching back was there. 5th round or so for a more typical Peterson backup. RB is just so devalued that you can find solid prospects even that late in the draft. Some guys like Arian Foster go undrafted even but if Norv finds someone he likes I have no problem with a 4th or 5th rounder being used on them. Sure we have holes elsewhere but to me, backup running back / 3rd down pass catching back IS a hole as well and you can get a really good player for not that much due to the positions value.
I understand that Peterson's great but he's getting up there and he's been hurt a lot, maybe not with things that directly keep him out of games but things he's had to deal with on a weekly basis. A good third down back like a Darren Sproles in his prime is just another weapon we can make use of and maybe just as important, take some wear and tear off Peterson. It's an element we've severely underused under Musgrave but there's nothing better for shaky QB play to be able to dump it off for a little 2 yard pass and the RB takes it 80 yards. I expect Norv to fix that.

I couldn't agree more. Either of the Oregon boys De'Anthony Thomas or LaMichael James could be explosive 3rd down backs. Plus they both have the added bonus of being able to take a share of punt/kick returns.
Re: Drafting a RB
Having two good running backs is a luxury when you have other positions without any good players. Emphasis should be on other positions. Maybe we can trade back in one of our slots and pick up a late round pick for a RB.

Re: Drafting a RB
I want Caerey but hes not going to be there late I don't think. I don't like the idea of another Toby type.
Re: Drafting a RB
Just grab a guy with some speed who played in a spread offense. Mid to late round. Or just sign an undrafted free agent or two. Norv will get it figured out. Thank god we have some competent coaches to try and make up for incompetent front office!!!
