Looney's hit on KWill was Legal?

Post by Texas Vike »

How is it that the NFL fines Bostic for what looked to me like a perfectly legal, and great BTW, hit and then says that Looney's cheap shot on Kevin Williams last night was legal? I don't get it.
The Vikings registered a complaint with the league claiming the unpenalized hit was illegal, but on Monday the NFL determined Looney's hit was legal and did not violate the new rule on peel-back blocks.
Fortunately he suffered no ligament damage. Even so, he's not a sure thing for the opener...

Legal, but dirty and unnecessary. Happens a lot in the NFL. Sucks, but glad he's okay.

Collinsworth said it was legal too...and I thought he was mistaken. Evidently not. It was dirty and totally unnecessary. A guy that big can just put his body on a guy.

I thought Kevin's knee was wrecked. Glad it's working out ok~

Cheap #### shot worthy of a legit fine. Period.

Ridiculous. Common sense needs a spokesperson at some point.

I think it's crap when players do stuff like this in preseason. I remember a few years ago Ray Lewis tried to twist Adrians knee AFTER a tackle. Glad KWill is okay tho, would be a bad way to end his Viking run, if 2013 is his last here.

Maybe legal, but unnecessary and borderline cheap. I doubt Looney was trying to injure him on purpose. But lets be honest, where do you want players to hit each other? It's already pretty much illegal to go high, or it's too risky. Now you want to take away the low stuff too? Lets just go ahead and make it touch football already. Now that they can't hit high, you're going to see a lot more knees getting blown out.

If it were up to me, only cheap shots would be considered illegal. It's football! I would have 1 rule. If you don't want to get hurt playing football, go sell insurance. Now that the league has all this data on the long term effects of concussions, slamming your body into other bodies year after year, and former players blowing holes in their chest, you know what you don't see? You don't see a long line of players retiring early. You don't see draft worthy college players opting for other careers. Nope, they know the consequences and they're still willing to risk a disability to play in the NFL, and that's the only data we should need.

I just read that Looney said he wasn't trying to hurt anyone. Just trying to finish his block and play to the whistle. It wasn't dirty or malicious, he's not that kind of guy.

I guess he's just stupid then~

I wonder how he'd react if someone did the same to him?

If the block was on Clay Matthews, Patrick Willis, or T.Suggs that'd be illegal and it would be a fine. NFL doesn't care about an aging star on the Vikings

Let's see.....

Cheap shot to Favre pretty much ending his career and we did nothing.

Same game (I think?) cheap shot to Allen took him out and luckily didn't end his career.

Cheap shot to Williams taking him out for maybe 6 games and we did nothing.

Granted, the Favre hit was sanctioned since that was the year the league determined NO should win the superbowl regardless, kind of like the Pittsburg/Seattle superbowl debacle giving Bettis a ring.

When will it be our turn to do whatever WE want and win our game? When will the officiating be done in a FAIR manner, cheap shots being called when they happen to US? We have been the red-headed stepchild of the NFL long enough. If the officials won't make the calls, maybe our players can start defending their own.

I don't want to see a player injured (especially ours) but I'm really tired of the free-for-all allowed CERTAIN teams who tend to be the leagues little darlings.

I dunno. He said he's been hurt before and wouldn't want to be responsible for injuring a guy. Said he looked for KWill after the game to check on him and apologize....but did't find him.

I can't fathom how a guy that size would think it's safe to roll into a guys knee. Obviously, he didn't intentionaly time it so he made contact when Kev's foot was planted.....but geez, Looney wasn't thinking at all then.

Sorry, I can't link to the quotes. There was a link at the bottom of the article discussing the surgeons opinions of KWill's injury~
