Pats sign Tebow

Post by dead_poet »

Tim Tebow - QB - Patriots

Patriots signed QB Tim Tebow, formerly of the Jets.

To clear roster space, they waived Mike Kafka, paving the way for Tebow to win New England's third-string quarterback job behind Tom Brady and Ryan Mallett. Tebow will be at Patriots minicamp on Tuesday. The connection is obvious; OC Josh McDaniels traded up for Tebow at the 25th overall pick while running the Broncos' football operations in 2010. We're assuming Tebow will primarily play quarterback, but he could also be tried at H-back or tight end while Rob Gronkowski (arm, back) rehabs. Of course, we won't hold our breath for McDaniels and Bill Belichick to reveal their specific plans.

McDaniels. What an idiot. :wallbang:

Wouldn't mind seeing the Vikes bring Mike Kafka to training camp. He'd only be competing against MBT and Jame Vandenberg for the third QB roster spot.

Yep. Gopher fans may remember him for running for 217 yards in a game in the dome in 2008 ;)

I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Belichick can convince Tebow to finally switch to the role he was born for. H-back/TE/all around athlete/occasional read option QB. If someone can get through to Tebow and convince him that he's not going to be a starting QB, it's Belichick.

Tim Tebow - QB - Patriots

ESPN's Chris Mortensen confirms Tim Tebow will be a quarterback with the Patriots.

Per Mort, Tebow will enter Tuesday's minicamp as New England's third-string QB, behind Tom Brady and Ryan Mallett. Despite previous rumors otherwise, Tebow is not being tried at tight end, although it would be in Tebow's best interests to be open to playing any position. He's avoided trying tight end in the past. Obviously, Tebow is not going to be a major threat for playing time behind future Hall of Famer Brady and young, strong-armed backup Mallett. The Pats may be simply kicking the tires on the former Josh McDaniels draft pick.

I really hope this is just a way for Belichick to finally kill the Tebow mania. Sign him up and bring him into camp, then cut him when it's painfully obvious that he can't do the job. That would pretty much be the final nail in the coffin of Tebow's NFL career....as a QB at least.

I don't see why he can't make the team. He's the #3, come in for a few wildcat/gadget plays and hold the clipboard the rest of the time. Anything more is gravy.

Meanwhile, they can work with him on his QB skills and see if he can become a legitimate NFL passer.

Gronk is having some major complications with his injuries. Not that Tebow is his replacement, but they aren't as deep at TE as it may seem.

I dunno. They have ample depth. 7 TEs in total. Aside from Gronk and Hernandez they have:

Jake Ballard
Michael Hoomanawanui
Daniel Fells
Brandon Ford
Zach Sudfeld

Granted neither Gronk nor Hernandez is fully healthy (Ballard is still recovering from knee surgery too). But I think they're pretty deep. Regardless, he's apparently being brought in to be a developmental QB and possibly gadget/bit player. I doubt he sniffs the field, provided he even makes the final roster.
