I got laid off so in addition to looking for work I've started a project, recreating Topps football cards starting with the first year Minnesota came into the league.
This is the last of the Philadelphia Gum Company cards. They were started in 1948 and were sold in 2003. They only held the NFL License for four years and IMHO the cards were pretty simple.
Ya those are sweet! I love the looks of those old cards with the cartoons on the back. You should try to simulate the looks of the player photos from those old cards too: hard to describe but the colors were a bit off and you could see the dot patterns from the printing process. They didn't have crisp digital photography like we have today!
I don't have a method yet for aging the pics that I'm happy with. I keep a copy of the PSD's just in case I want/need to make a change. In the meanwhile...
I'm thinking of tweaking Ponder's card, rotating the back and getting rid of the border. These continue to evolve and I'll probably go back and unify the designs when I'm done.
nag, nag, nag (lol) There are a crapload of details on these. The latest one, 1976 (Toby Gerhart) took a gawdawful amount of time to do. I had done 1972-1975 before and so I had it easy on those, but '76 kicked my butt.
