“If I can change one thing about my life, Gary Anderson would make that damn kick,” Carter said. “And then Jimmy Hitchcock would not get beat on a third and 9 on an out and up.”

Nah, anybody can do it.The Breeze wrote:As far as 120 goes, Moore set the record with 123 in 95 while Carter and Rice both finished with 122, Welker has had 123 and 122. Megatron had 122 last season and Harrison obliterated the record with 143 in 02. That's it, 6 guys have caught 120. Rare indeed.

BTW, you may know this already but CC actually set the record with 122 a year before Moore broke it in '95 with 123. In other words, CC had back to back 122 catch seasons! I think Welker may be the only other player who has more than one.

I actually missed that. So, Carter and Welker are the only guys with 2. Carter was great. IMO the only way to overrate him would be to put him in the greatest category/discussion, which I don't believe I've seen anyone do.Mothman wrote:

And to Eli's point above, I also believe that CC's mouth is what causes some to downplay his significance, and that's just ego stuff both ways.
Re: NFL.com most over & underated player team history
Exactly. The number one reason that Cris Carter can't possibly be considered overrated is that not many people, apart from Vikings fans, think very highly of him.
Re: NFL.com most over & underated player team history
If that's true how did he ever make the HOF? I'm not trying to defend everything CC did/does (Heck I can't do that even for myself!) but I don't think saying "not may people think highly of him" is accurate...Eli wrote:Exactly. I've told people a million times not to exaggerate!

Whoever put Joe Kapp on that list needs to know that I have loose ties to a mob family, and I'm not shy about calling in a favor.Mothman wrote:The lists on NFL.com (at the link above) are interesting:
Overrated:
Chris Hovan
Bernard Berrian

Gary Larsen

Were any of the guys they listed ever "overrated" by us fans? Berrian sucked and had one nice year here with Frerotte

No. Like I said above, They're mostly disappointments and one-year-wonders. I suppose there could be an argument to be made that Joe Kapp was overrated, as he's a sentimental favorite of some older fans, but if you were to ask most Vikings fans for their top five QBs in franchise history, he wouldn't make many of the lists.NextQuestion wrote:Were any of the guys they listed ever "overrated" by us fans? You couldn't easily put together a list of overrated players by asking the fans of a team, could you? That's why they asked Wobby for a list of underrated players, but either they didn't ask him for the overrated, or else he declined.

Re: NFL.com most over & underated player team history
I'm thinking it's possible that Cris Carter was underrated. Who was throwing him the ball all those years? A pretty motley collection of journeymen QB's if you ask me. Guys that may have collected a pro-bowl appearance, but weren't consistent at all. Compare to Jerry Rice, who was blessed with two HOF QB's, or Marvin Harrison, who had Manning, or Michael Irvin, who had the top running back in history and a HOF QB.
His signature highlight catch, often shown on TV, is a 3rd down catch against the Lions that was so good, the refs couldn't believe he caught it, and ruled it incomplete (in the days before instant replay)
IMO, Rice was just better, but Carter is the 2nd best of all time. Or maybe I've just proven the author's point, but I seem to be alone in this opinion.

Re: NFL.com most over & underated player team history
the moss carter duo was the best tandem in nfl history. imagine if either had young or montana throwing to them throughout their careers instead of all the different qb's the vikes had. moss would have easily challenged rice's stats (and in my opinion beat them), and cris carter had the best hands of any receiver to play football.

Not alone... I think CC is right there behind Rice too.

Carter is the 2nd best WR to ever play. Only Jerry Rice was better, or played on a better team. Shudder to think was carter would have been with Joe Montana and Co.
