If you watch his videos you know he's much more versatile than that already. However would you rather manufacture his touches early so he can have a greater chance at having an impact or ask him to run a complete route tree, something that he likely will struggle with at least his first year?
I'm in the camp that says: do whatever you want/can to be successful. I don't care how the sausage is made as long as it's delicious. As long as he gets positive yardage and the offense is successful...does it really matter?
I'm also pretty sure the Vikings are doing more to help develop his weaknesses (route running) than his strength. I mean, how does one groom someone for open-field explosive, make-guys-miss plays? If they're just fine-tuning his bubble screen abilities...that'd really make no sense.

He likes to use his running skills after the catch, which Harvin did with the Vikes and was leading the league in rerceiving before his injury. He was asked which HE preferred not what Musgrave prefers (which will be what he will do).
Jeez, of course the sky is falling and the cynics continue to find fault with most everything

I know we have a bad history of late with wide outs ..
Patterson has similar (if not better skill set to Jerry Rice)
What made Rice great though was desire and work ethic ...
I don't think we can know for a year or two if Patterson is a
whiner (like Harvin) or a worker (Like Peterson)

I'm not concerned about his character, just his skill set. Yes, the Vikings do have a bad history of late with wideouts.

Okay, just watched the video. What's the big problem? Patterson said he'd prefer a bubble screen, but he also said he'd prefer a one-handed catch and a QB with both a cannon arm and good accuracy. This kid likes to run, which is good, because if he didn't he would be wasting a huge talent that he possesses. But I saw nothing in the video that leads me to believe the Vikings will only dink and dunk to him. That kind of height and speed will definitely be running go-routes from time to time, not to mention some quick hits and slants.

Harvin was Rookie of the Year and incredibly productive when healthy. I would be really happy if Patterson echoed Harvin's skillset (minus the attitude).

I watched this video and got really pumped up. The guy reminds of Larry Fitzgerald
a little. I think he could be an great wide out for us. I am hoping he scores hundreds
of touchdowns in Viking Purple over the years

Analysis: Shortly after the draft, we were led to believe that the Vikings rookie would fit in as a kickoff returner this season while he learned how to play receiver at the professional level. But if offseason practices were any indication, Patterson might be ready for a bigger role on offense right away. Can he emerge from training camp as a starter opposite Greg Jennings? That's the Vikings' best-case scenario, one that didn't seem possible in April but can't be ruled out on the eve of camp.

I would hope Cordarrelle Patterson will start opposite of Jennings. I wouldn't rush him though. A part of me wants Simpson to hold that #2 spot, but I think he we will eventually lose it to Patterson.

Vikings also have signed Cordarrelle Patterson, per person with knowledge. All first-round picks under contract.

Sure, it’s early in training camp, but a first glimpse of rookie Cordarrelle Patterson reveals special skills.
“If you were going to put together a receiver,” said Vikings coach Leslie Frazier, “he would look like Cordarrelle.”
“When he walks in your room and takes up the doorway, you’re like, ‘Wow, that is a big man,’ ” said Mike Priefer, the Vikings special teams coordinator.
Patterson is listed at 6-2 and 220 pounds. Saturday morning, during a walkthrough practice, he wore his visor upside down and backward, where it supported burnt orange dreadlocks. “I got tired of how my hair looked, so I added a little color,” he said.
The Vikings aren’t downplaying their plans for Patterson. You could see him returning kicks, taking handoffs, catching short passes and running deep. If they are right about him, he will be paying homage to a number of former Vikings receivers for a number of years.
