Re: Vikings Trade Harrison Phillips
I don’t get it. I know they are pretty deep on the defensive line now, but it feels like a salary dump. Plus the Vikings are paying half of his salary this year? I thought they would get more in return for Philips, who is a solid player. Or I am I totally off base?

Freeing cap space? Felton and Addison hurt today40for60 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 20, 2025 7:10 pm I don’t get it. I know they are pretty deep on the defensive line now, but it feels like a salary dump. Addison has already been reported to be fine. No update on Felton. Losing him would be significant, I'm sure they plan on using him more while Addison is out.psjordan wrote: ↑Wed Aug 20, 2025 7:23 pmFreeing cap space? Overall it just shows how they feel about the depth on the line. If you've got another player you feel is just as good but cheaper why not go with them?
I do think they're going to be signing some WR or another soon though.

I get that but it seems they just gave him away. Pay half of his salary this year and basically a late round draft pick swap. I guess I thought they could get a little better trade.Cliff wrote: ↑Wed Aug 20, 2025 8:25 pmAddison has already been reported to be fine. No update on Felton. I think we have two rookies who will make the team now that Phillips is gone. Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins and Elijah Williams have been playing well, and I predict we will bring back Adam Thielan. would love for us to trade for McLaurin , but his cost would be too much.

Re: Vikings Trade Harrison Phillips
This is a little surprising given the Vikings just extended Phillips and he's been a really good player for them, but I think it's more an indicator of just how much talent they feel they have along the defensive line right now. This looks like it could be one of the best fronts the Vikings have fielded in a long time, and the Vikings have fielded some really excellent fronts. The youth and depth will allow them to keep the line fresh, and that should also show up later in games in higher pressure rates and more negative plays for opposing offenses.
As far as the compensation aspect of the move goes, that wasn't great, but Phillips is 29 and does carry a decent cap hit. The fact the Vikings agreed to absorb some of that hit suggests that even though Phillips is still an effective player, his salary didn't match his production, at least from the perspective of the Jets.

I loved the Ingram-Dawkins pick and am not surprised at all to see him playing well. I think if he'd had more exposure in college he would have been a top 15 pick.Husker Vike wrote: ↑Wed Aug 20, 2025 10:01 pm I think we have two rookies who will make the team now that Phillips is gone. Elijah Williams is the kind of surprise that comes along once a generation. He was a "walk on"? Is that even a thing for NFL teams? He just makes play after play and is smart on top of it which helps the guys around him make plays. He's been a force multiplier and still has a lot of room to improve as well.
Re: Vikings Trade Harrison Phillips
5 out of the last 6 games we gave up over 100 yards rushing with efforts that included 178, 154, 158. Looks like the finger was pointed at him for some of that. They just gave him an extension 9/24. Swallowing some cap for nothing is never the best approach but obviously they have player(s) that can take over.

I doubt Vikings are bringing back Adam, the only way that Adam is coming back is when Adam signs a one day contract with the Vikings and retire with the VikingsHusker Vike wrote: ↑Wed Aug 20, 2025 10:01 pm I think we have two rookies who will make the team now that Phillips is gone. Re: Vikings Trade Harrison Phillips
I am not happy that Vikings traded Harrison, Vikings should have gotten a 3rd round pick but Harrison going to a terrible team really sucks, he deserved better! Thank you for everything Mr. Harrison!

Re: Vikings Trade Harrison Phillips
He probably did deserve better, but to be fair to the Vikings they did ink him to a pretty decent extension prior to the start of last season. I believe they viewed him as a key piece of their interior DL as a well as a vet leader on defense.VikingsFan12345 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 22, 2025 12:58 pm I am not happy that Vikings traded Harrison, Vikings should have gotten a 3rd round pick but Harrison going to a terrible team really sucks, he deserved better! I just think Phillips may have hit the figurative wall. He's 29 years old, which probably put him right on the edge of where a DT's play might start to drop off, and there is plenty of evidence that is exactly what happened to him late in the season last year when the Vikings defense started to get a bit leaky against the run. That wasn't all Phillips' fault but I think between that and the offseason acquisitions at his position he was making too much for his level of production going forward. It's hard to assess his trade value but for a guy at his age making what he is scheduled to make producing at the rate he was producing I think the trade value was about right. As I noted earlier in the thread, the fact the Vikings had to agree to pay a sizeable chunk of his contract this year pretty much proves that point.
The interior line looks to be deep and very strong this year. Flores is going to be able to keep fresh guys rotating in who will be strong against both the pass and run. Assuming the edge players are effective, this is going to be a really fun defensive line to watch. Lots of evidence they're already wrecking the reconstituted Vikings offensive line and have had similar results against the Patriots when the two teams practiced together. Couple that improved play with a secondary full of guys who have the freedom to make plays on the ball and we should be looking at an improved overall defense compared to last year. It sucks that a fan favorite like Harrison Phillips won't be part of that but you are going to like the overall result.
