$375k remainder of this year, to practice squad first to give him chance to move on if another starter gets hurt this week

I really like this move, especially for the price. Just like the Jets and Panthers for Darnold, the Giants have been a complete dumpster fire. I definitely like the strategy of collecting QBs with first round talent coming from teams that couldn't capitalize on it. Though Jones has had issues staying healthy.

I think it's a good move. The coaches must see something in him.

They wouldn't be the first. He was physically talented enough to go high in the first round and earn himself a big contract. Not that the Giants are a shining example of how to run a team, but they have been in football long enough to see talent even if they aren't able to take advantage of it.

Re: Vikes to sign Daniel Jones
I think it's great for Jones. Sitting can sometimes lead to good things ahead. With Darnold getting knocked around we might need him before the season is over. After what we went through last year with nothing at QB and unable to win they are doing what is necessary to avoid that again. All the players and coaches want to win. They wouldn't be in this sport at this level if they didn't.Cliff wrote: ↑Wed Nov 27, 2024 1:05 pmThey wouldn't be the first. Didn't see that one coming. Lol
Might want to check the other threads...
This is good. Sam gets paid elsewhere next year. Danny learns play book the rest of this year. Signs 1 year prove it deal to back up JJ.

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

At least we get a look at him for the rest of the season at an affordable price.
And pick up another backup with experience.
Seems like a no brainer.
Dimes gets to throw to some quality receivers.

Thanks for the laugh. I forgot his Danny Dimes nickname. I have no idea how our QB situation will go into the future but it's nice to have a kid with a ton of talent and a couple of young guys who also have talent that have been through the grind a few times. I'm happy with Sam. That OT drive showed alot. He dug out of trouble. It was no gimme. It's best if he keeps playing well.

Re: Vikes to sign Daniel Jones
I was surprised when Jones went as high as he did in the 1st round, much less that he even went in the 1st round the year he came out. I don't believe most mocks had him coming off the board in the 1st, so it seemed like a speculative pick at the time. I think most mocks had him coming off the board between rounds 4-6, so he was fairly evaluated as a mid-round prospect.
Not sure how or why the Giants gave him the big extension either. He did lead them to the playoffs and did get them past the Vikings that year, but despite their record that year the Vikings really weren't all that great a team and Ed Donatell was a terrible defensive coordinator who basically allowed Jones to do what he seems to do best which is take off and run. Jones' stats and relative rankings never suggested he was more than a middling QB.
To me, Jones looks like a slightly more talented Josh Dobbs to be honest. Holds the ball too long, doesn't do a great job reading the field post snap, and isn't all that great a passer. Maybe KOC sees something there that I don't, but I'm not all that excited about the move to get Jones TBH. If Darnold goes down it will be Nick Mullens coming in, not Jones, at least not for the rest of this year.

Re: Vikes to sign Daniel Jones
Well the year Jones came out Haskins went round 1 also and did nothing at the pro level. Teams reach for QBs because there isn't many of them available that can play good at the pro level. How does a guy like Richardson who was hurt and inaccurate in college go round 1? He was a long term development guy and that's worth pick 4. He had games of 31 and 39 completion pct this year. Jones is like the best ever to play the game compared to that embarrassment. I give Jones credit with the fact he took a beating in NY because they have no idea how to build an OL, sound familiar?, and beyond that no WRs. He's only here as a favor and will be gone in 2025 unless a team grabs him before that because of injury. Maybe no teams will even look. That's possible.VikingLord wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2024 11:13 amI was surprised when Jones went as high as he did in the 1st round, much less that he even went in the 1st round the year he came out. Re: Vikes to sign Daniel Jones
Jones signed a one-year contract and will begin his new job as a member of the Vikings' practice squad, where he admitted he will need to spend time learning an offense he has never played in.
"It's about putting in the time to learn it, to study it," he said. "I'm catching up and these guys are game-planning and focusing on winning, so you don't want to slow anything down with that. It's on me to catch up, to take the time outside of meetings, outside of practice to learn it, and that's what I'll do."
The Vikings do not appear eager to replace backup Nick Mullens this season, and coach Kevin O'Connell praised No. 3 quarterback Brett Rypien's work with the scout team earlier this week. It would take a unique series of events to force Jones onto the field anytime soon, pushing the focus toward potentially pairing him with McCarthy next season if Darnold moves on as a pending free agent.
Like Darnold, Mullens and Rypien are on expiring contracts. O'Connell said he will spend some individual time with Jones on a weekly basis, as he does with McCarthy. But most of Jones' time will be spent with quarterbacks coach Josh McCown and assistant offensive coordinator/assistant quarterbacks coach Grant Udinski.
"You're really doing two things at once," O'Connell said. "You're building a longer-term foundation, but at the same time keeping a mindset on if Daniel is called upon to play, we want to make sure we're not wasting time on the present and we make sure he's ready to step in if need be."

Re: Vikes to sign Daniel Jones
I am kind of puzzled that everyone seems to assume that Darnold will be gone next year. If he takes the team into the playoffs and wins at least the first round, would we really let him go in favor of a completely untested rookie who has already managed to get seriously injured? I think not.

Re: Vikes to sign Daniel Jones
I agree with you. Everyone hopes that JJM will be the guy next year but hope isn't a good foundation block it's a wish. I expect KOC to do what's best for the teams chances next year. Darnold has played great. He seems to fit in. JJM is here for 4 years right now. Year 1 was a wash out. Won't even see a snap. If they need to tag Darnold that would be ok. What has Caleb done or Maye.chicagopurple wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2024 3:42 pm I am kind of puzzled that everyone seems to assume that Darnold will be gone next year.
