Vikings sign Gilmore

Post by VikingsVictorious »

1 year deal for up to $10 Million with $7Million guaranteed.
An all in deal for this season.
I'm not sure how it works, but we could have carried over that cap space to next year is my understanding.
I'm not for or against this signing. Just pointing out the details.

Would have preferred Justin Simmons who signed for less than that at that price. This is a Patrick Peterson signing all over again. Sign a guy that's past his prime at 33.

33 YO and they give 7 million +. We might have the oldest secondary in the NFL. A 33 and 35 YO. Never thought I'd see that and rebuild at the same time. Wait that's the competitive piece. This is a throw back season. The over the hill gang rides again. In 5 years fans will look back at embarrassments and this will be part of it. Of course the 3-0 game won't be far behind. Lowest total points ever in an indoor facility. Won that in 12 innings. The one time I wanted Peg to miss he hits to avoid 0-0. Maybe we collect a 3-2 or 2-0 deal this year. That would add more excitement. It wouldn't shock me. If Rodgers gets hurt that could happen. Jets can play top D and without him forget scoring.

It's fine imho. One very possible scenario is, we could trade him to a contender before the deadline for a pick, which we don't have an excess of, hah. : |
Through that lens, it's potentially buying a pick. I don't think it impacts the cap next year from what I saw.

If we're contending for some reason, and he's playing well, then heck yes to the signing. I think it's likely we can get a draft asset though.

I'm almost certain there's a way to carry over left over cap money from this year to next year. I don't understand it, but I think teams can do it.

Matt Coller says the Vikings went way above any other offer Gilmore got.

Why all the doom and gloom?

As far as the Gilmore signing goes, the only question I have is can he still play and be effective? Yeah, he's a bit on the older side, but if he can lock down his side of the field and give the Vikings some veteran leadership in the secondary I'm all for the signing.

Too early to judge a move like this. Yes, it would be better if someone like Booth had emerged, but that didn't happen and the secondary is what it is. If Gilmore improves that side of the ball we'll all be happy they signed him and won't really care about the cap hit. It is a one year deal, so it's not like they sold the farm or anything.

Personally, I liked what I saw out of the Vikings offense against the Browns. Granted, it is preseason, but KOC is showing a commitment to running the ball and if early returns indicate anything it is that they will be able to run it. And if the offense can pick up consistent yards on the ground then whoever is throwing the ball is going to be put in very favorable positions and the offense will be able to move it. Special teams looks good too. So the only major question mark facing this team is the defense, and on the defense, the biggest question mark there is the secondary. The secondary looked terrible against the Raiders and better against the Browns. Here's hoping Flores can find a way to wring every last drop of talent out of a challenged position group. Early returns are mixed so far, but the way I see it adding Gilmore helps.

He hurt his shoulder in the final regular-season game and played through the injury during the Cowboys' wild-card round loss in the playoffs, before undergoing surgery for a torn labrum. I hope they checked that out. It's a year band aid. I also hope he's in shape or football shape is better.
Recovery time from a torn shoulder labrum can range from four to six weeks to a year, depending on several factors:
Surgery: The quality of the surgical repair
Location: Where the tear is located
Severity: How severe the tear is
Activity: How much the shoulder is used, and the type of activity you participate in

There is a way to carry over cap. We went through that on the board many times. There was a poster on here who knew it well. KAM always outbids in FA. Davenport 13 mill for a prove it deal. That's double. Even Darnold at 10 million is double. He should have got a Mayfield type of deal before he signed his new deal. It was the same scenario. That's desperation. It always leads to bad decisions. We lost 2 high priced FA which leads to comp picks. He gave them away already. The 49ers use them year in and year out.

I'm not Doom and Gloom at all. I'm very "meh" on this signing. I'd like to know what the $3 million in incentives are. If they're unlikely to be achieved than the deal is $7 million not $10M. I'm slightly positive at that price.

I can't speak to what the Vikings paid in this case and I totally understand if people aren't generally excited about the move, but the Vikings were in pretty dire need at the CB position and Gilmore does bring a lot of experience to the table.

I'm also a little suspicious of the claim that the Vikings offered way more than anyone else offered Gilmore. Unless a claim like that came directly from his agent I don't know how anyone outside of Gilmore's inner circle would have any idea who offered him what. The league needs quality CB's almost as much as it needs quality QB's so it wouldn't surprise me at all if several teams were in the market for Gilmore's services.

I get the suspicion, but I will say is Matt Coller is not in the habit of saying things without solid evidence. How he learned of this I don't know.

I’m with VL on this one, in fact I almost posted with the same title he used on his first post above.

Look, we were DECIMATED at the CB position, and a lot of emotion attached to those bad outcomes in the DB room. We needed not only a body who can play, but a veteran who hopefully can put some "life perspective" in place for the younger guys. After losing two players in dramatic fashion, I wholeheartedly applaud the signing of Gilmore.

As for us (i.e., Kam) “overpaying” for an experienced vet with maybe hopefully one or two good years left, good gosh, why wouldn’t we have to? We’re not considered a contender, our QB situation is completely unproven, most of the team and coaching staff is fairly young. Of course we have to overpay for veteran FA’s. Some folks post like Kam has all the cards and keeps overpaying. We don't have all the cards, it's that simple.

IMHO I love the signing, for both on-field and off-field reasons. But like all signings, I'm always wait and see and hope for the best.

Re: Over-paying.

I couldn't find a ton of sources for what Gilmore's estimated salary would be, but I found a couple. Vikings gave a 10m with incentives and 7mil guaranteed.

Before that contract happened:

A to Z sports - 1 yr 8.5m APY fully GTD

OverTheCap had him at 7.6 annually.

YardBarker 8.5m guaranteed.

There might have been less of a market than they thought, but it obviously wasn't some crazy overreach.

This is a PP replay and the money is about the same. I expect the results to be similar. I guess PP had some good moments but nothing is sticking out. I call it Insanity. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different result. I'm sure KAM will come up with something he thinks is clever to describe it. Competitive Insanity.
PP is Pat Peterson.

The real problem here isn't that the Vikings signed Stephen Gilmore or PP. The real problem is their bad luck/picks at the CB position over multiple drafts. It's not like the Vikings haven't tried to fix their talent issues at the position in the draft over the last decade. They've spent plenty of early round picks, including multiple 1sts, attempting to do exactly that. Those players just haven't panned out for whatever reason, which has forced them to then try to plug the gaps using mostly free agency, and, as you point out, that is rarely going to solve the problem because few teams are willing to let effective CBs leave in free agency.

Over the years I've been a fan of this team they've been incredibly effective/lucky drafting at WR and RB in general, while equally ineffective/unlucky at drafting CB and OL. Maybe not OL so much, but that unit always seems to be an area of weakness as of late.
