"Snake Bitten" does seem to be the appropriate term. I convinced myself several years ago that if there is a God... the only thing he/she hates more than the Viking are the Vikings' fans. It's really hard to not be a cynical bastard when you're a Vikings' fan. It's not a question of if something will go wrong. It's a question of when something will go wrong.
I wouldn't call it Snake Bitten because injuries are part of the game. Burrow has missed how much time? Jets sign Rodgers boom gone. He missed a season when Barr knocked him out. I'm sure there is more. At least it wasn't a torn knee or a ripped shoulder. I don't think it's the end of the world. He can continue his development on the sideline which is what he was going to do anyway. Here we sit now with a bust and nothing else. We did that to ourselves. We had a guy that played many straight games while taking a beaten which I would call great luck. We didn't want that even after watching that 3-6 melt down. Who wants to watch another run like that.
We were a playoff team last year and lost our qb, now lost another one who needs development before the season even started. Two years in a row!

But, I seem to recall Randall only experiencing soreness & he was able to play with it after the clean-up procedure. Maybe I'm not remembering correctly though. It was almost 26 years ago.
A real meniscus tear is a lot more involved than a clean-up and could be months. Also, if he has a full tear, it's possible he has some lower grade damage to other ligaments in knee. However every injury and person is different. I have no inside knowledge, just talking out loud from my own knee injuries, kiddos injuries, and being around sports a lot of my life.

I guess snake bitten fits. For me the only thing that would make this year entertaining was watching JJM go through that 1st year of playing. Trying to make a bust into a player provides very little if any entertainment value for me. I've seen that act. Hopefully we get lucky and the kid will be ready to go mid season. But the cynical side is saying forget that.

Based on your experience, do you think the fact he kept playing means the injury was less severe? I'd think a full tear with the involvement of other ligaments would have forced him out of the game, but I don't know if someone can play through a really severe injury like that. From what I saw during the game it didn't appear as if McCarthy was favoring either leg or had any pain in his knee, so I'm hopeful that indicates a less serious injury as compared to a more serious injury, but I'm curious what your take is just based on what is known so far and your experiences.

We know now it was a full tear, and they are saying he's done for the year. I'd guess that is caution more than anything. The ACL being one that's a concern due to location. Wouldn't be shocked if he had a level 1 strain on other ligaments.

When I tore my left knee up I knew something was wrong immediately. Heard, and felt, a pop. It wasn't that painful initially. But I could tell something was off. It started to hurt a lot more the next day. I'd guess adrenaline played a part. I did acl and mcl. If I was competing for a qb1 role, and had the expectations of being a top pick, I'd probably have went back on the field.

I think I'll change my prediction to 2025. This sucks. Feel like it takes the air out of the season before it even starts.

100%, I always joke with friends that we get so excited over the off season and by week 6-8 you have a good idea of it’s over or not. Never thought I’d lose all my excitement after 1 pre season game, but the Vikings pulled it off! I seen 3-13 seasons, years where our HB was our only chance at going deep, but this tops them all. No matter how much people can say what if for Darnold I’m just not buying, we have a designated bust starting for us with no clear back up. My only excitement for this team is hoping we get the first overall pick.

I can tell you right now that the Vikes will never get the #1 pick in the draft without trading up for it. They could have the worst team in the NFL but would somehow still fluke their way to enough wins to end up picking outside of the top 5.

Wow, I suppose if you've got a lot of adrenaline going it probably wouldn't feel immediately painful.

The way I look at it McCarthy was going to sit this year anyway. Yeah, I hoped he would outright win the starting job but the way KOC played Darnold in the opener told me how he viewed the two of them, and I suppose I can understand why that would be even if I thought McCarthy looked great.

And in the bigger picture I'm actually far more concerned about the Vikings secondary right now than I am the QB situation even with McCarthy out and Addison being carted off. Darnold can run the offense as can Mullens. Neither is going to light it up but both can run it given the talent around them on offense. But the secondary looks very questionable on paper, both in terms of talent and depth.

Agreed. Secondary in today's nfl is my greatest concern. And we are already bandaided together there. We are gonna have to put some real resources into CB before we have any real chance imho. As good as Flores can scheme, so can nfl offensive play callers. He got figured out last year by the end.

You 2 are correct about the CBs but I'm a firm believer in taking care of the LOS first. If you can't attack the QB no CB can play well. Same on the other side. I'd prefer to build working back. That Eagles squad had a so so secondary and still made the SB. Setting the record for sacks helped. When that pass rush wasn't good they couldn't stop anybody. Just my 2 cents.

I wonder if they will sign another QB. Nick hasn't been the picture of health during his career including last season. Perhaps they are waiting for the final cuts? Maybe just roll the dice and see what happens? Once we get past the Giants we face some teams that come after the QB. We have 2 more preseason games. There's not too many out there like Dobbs who learned the offense on a plane ride. Even Hall was knocked out. They better be looking at this.

Stop the run on the early downs and force obvious passing situations and then get after the passer consistently and a lot of secondary deficiencies can be masked. Vikings did make a lot of investments in the front 7 so hopefully the issue won't be a glaring problem. Still don't know how the Vikings do better than .500 even if they have an effective front on defense, though. Schedule is just so brutal to start the year.

The only thing that saves them is the NFC is weak overall plus these players want to win. But I don't see over 500. Some teams did a great job of improvement in our own division. They attacked their weaknesses aggressively.
We plod along with the same people hoping for improvement. Same scheme that fell to pieces last year. I would have blow up areas that are weak. Same secondary, same C, Gs. How will that change anything. This year we are done and we lost the kid QB. A QB needs playing time. That's been pushed off another year. Watching isn't the same as playing. Of course if he's a magic man he'll be the best. That won't happen.
Your correct force teams into situations. That gives a big advantage to the D. Man did our D fall off the cliff. That was shocking bad. Those big games against the Bears and Raiders meant nothing. They were both horrible on O with nothing at QB. Signing this Murphy in FA was a bad move. The Cards secondary is worse than ours. That's KAM. Look at the teams with great secondaries. You might get a guy from them who can be close to average player. But more than likely they will suck. Teams don't dump good+ CBs. They are hard to find and very valuable. You need the draft to fill that space.
