You think it was the right decision. It may have been. Steinbrenner may have made the right decision firing and hiring Billy Martin 5 times. Or maybe he should have just left him alone and let him do his thing. Why is it not OK for me to have my opinion that the Wilfs royally screwed up. You seem to be having some kind of vendetta against me.J. Kapp 11 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 1:32 pmWhatever. You probably made the wrong decision just because he annoyed you. Remember a baseball Manager Billy Martin. He won several world series with the NY Yankees. He was fired and rehired by George Steinbrenner I think 5 times. Sometimes annoying people make great leaders.
And guess what? It was the right decision. My call, not yours.

It's not your opinion VV that I personally have been arguing against. We all have them, and are entitled to such.VikingsVictorious wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 1:42 pmYou think it was the right decision. My argument in these discussions is regardless of how passionate we are as fans, we don't have any of the information. Opinions based on facts and knowledge are one thing, opinions on situations we have no information on are another thing all together.
Is it possible the Wilfs screwed up? Of course. But we're basing that on nothing because we weren't in the day-long interview process. We don't know what they are trying to build. We don't know the boxes they wanted to check for this hire. Furthermore, unless you have knowledge on O'Connell that I don't, we know nothing about how much he wowed in his interview. Sound like he did very well.
In general I just find reactions of these hires funny, on both sides. If people loved O'Connell and were predicting Super Bowl wins before he was even hired I'd question it the same way I do people talking about how bad he is before he even has the job. Unless of course you or others have way more inside info than myself at which point I'm miss-speaking. But if you have the same exact knowledge on this guy that I do, than saying this was a bad hire seems pretty premature to me.

First of all let's take Harbaugh out of the situation and how does O'Connell look. I think his credentials other than being on a good team this year are lacking. I think McVay ran the offense and O'Connell was his sidekick. Now putting Harbaugh back in the equation he's just such a proven commodity. Those two factors make me pretty confident in my belief that the Wilfs royally screwed up. I also like Harbaugh because I hear he's very strange.vikeinmontana wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 2:05 pmIt's not your opinion VV that I personally have been arguing against. I don't know any of his credentials as a fan. But those within the league do and from what I've read he seems to be talked about pretty highly. People probably thought Zac Taylors credentials were lacking too going to the Bengals from the Rams QB coach. Now they are playing in a game I have never seen the Vikings play in my 41 years on earth.VikingsVictorious wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 2:13 pmFirst of all let's take Harbaugh out of the situation and how does O'Connell look. I actually do agree with you a little bit in regards to the NFL hiring in general though. Many of these guys main credentials is that they led either a top ranked offense or defense in the coordinator role. We see it every year. A team has an amazing defense and next thing you know they're getting interviews for a head coach. Year after year after year. Some out great, and others don't. Leslie Frazier has proved to be one of the best DC's in the game. We saw how he was as a head coach. Now suddenly he has another top ranked D, and will get another shot at head coach.
I just don't have the info on McConnell like those in the coaching and management circles have. I have to trust those that have already hired him, guys like McVay who didn't want him to apply for the Chargers job last season, people who have worked with him, and our own front office who was reported to have been in awe of his interview.
i'm ready for a beer.

Interviews are incredibly overrated. I could hardly care less about an interview. The world is filled with people who interview great and can't do the job worth crap. I'll take performance over interviews 100 times out of 100.vikeinmontana wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 2:28 pmI don't know any of his credentials as a fan. Re: Coaching search 2022 - Confirmed Interviews and Speculation
Yes but they are important in the sense that if a franchise has a vision of the direction they want to go, and the interviewee doesn't seem to share that same vision, the interview was valuable. That has been my point. Harbaugh is likely a great coach with an excellent football mind. But if he didn't fit, or had a different direction in mind than the front office, it seems wise that we didn't hire a person who doesn't align with the GM and owner.VikingsVictorious wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 2:53 pmInterviews are incredibly overrated. Go ahead. I dare you.
Underestimate this man.

Hopefully I'll be as impressed once he is officially hired and sits down with the media to answer questions.J. Kapp 11 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 11:27 am It's not like KOC is just a nice, handsome guy who speaks well. The reports I read say the entire search team, including KAM, were extremely impressed with his vision for the organization. I don't know about you, but that means a lot to me.
I posted this in another thread, but I think if the Wilfs insist on remaining integral to the operations side of the team, this isn't going to end well no matter how collaborative KAM or KOC are. At some point things are going to go south. At some point strong leadership is going to be required. At some point controversial decisions will have to be made.
Who makes those decisions. How does the group deal with controversy and difficulty?
It might just be possible that what we saw happen with Spielman and Zimmer was not a result of them so much as a result of the organizational structure and continued input of the Wilfs into the football operations side of the team. If that is the issue, then it will manifest again with KAM and KOC. Just a matter of time.

I said strong. I don't think he was demanding that. Maybe from the bears, but not from us. Re: Coaching search 2022 - Confirmed Interviews and Speculation
I attack a lot of what you say because a lot of what you say is an attack on what I say. I say a lot of things that are opinion. I have a right to do that. Did you go back and double check when you angrily accused me of misquoting you? If you did you will see I didn't misquote you and you obviously misquoted me. You took my simple statement that Cousins wasn't making $45 million this year as if I was saying you said that was his salary. Jumping to conclusions. Then you took my statement that IF Cousins was making $30 million which is what I believe his next contract will be around it would be less than 15% of the cap and acted like I said his $45 million cap hit this year was 15% and said I needed a calculator.J. We will never know if you made the right decision. You are capable of making a right decision but like anybody else you are capable of making a wrong decision. If we could turn back time and you hire him and compare what did happen with what didn't is the only way we could know.
Once any decision a person makes is made all that's left is for better or worse to live with the results. As fans it is our duty to second guess the management.
