Same here. The playcalling last night was atrocious. As a head coach, when the offense fails, zimmer fails. He can no longer act like a glorified defensive coordinator with a head coaching title. He has to be intricately involved in the total development of the team, not just the defense. The next offensive coordinator needs to be able to fit the personnel we have. I'm interested to see how stefanski runs the offense seeing the things that shurmur did that worked and what flip did that didnt work.PurpleMustReign wrote: ↑Tue Dec 11, 2018 12:17 pmI agree but I am glad it happened. What a debacle. In fairness, we would have likely kept Shurmer had he not taken the job in New York.

Never nice when a man loses his job. I hope he gets another go at a 're-building' team as I think he has something. But he's not the right fit for us.
Looking forward to seeing what Stef can do.

Re: FLIP HAS BEEN FIRED!!!
I really am baffled by DeFelippo though. We were all duped, even lots of folks in the NFL who thought he was the next coming. Not only did he regress as a playcaller, he seemed to lack a feel for the game. Even more, you'd think a guy who a lot of people considered a strong HC candidate for 2019 would have an ability to discern the issues in his offense and address them and adapt. He did none of this. He just kept forcing his brand of offense even though it clearly wasn't working. That would be a huge red flag to me if I'm still a team considering him for a HC position because while I think this situation here in Minnesota should be something that sets him back, there's probably a team out there thinking it was just a bad fit and willing to give him a chance.

So whose plays and calls are they going to be running. Too late to re-write the books. Best bet is to alter what is there but it will probably be pretty vanilla.

Not necessarily - didn't the 2012 Ravens fire their OC in week 14 and then go on to win the super bowl?mansquatch wrote: ↑Tue Dec 11, 2018 12:13 pm This needed to happen, but it is also probably a signal that the season is done.

Yes. Re: FLIP HAS BEEN FIRED!!!
Last night was absolutely BRUTAL to watch and I, like a lot of others on here, feel a sense of relief at this move. I've always wondered if they blocked Stefanski's interview for exactly this reason. I feel like he was their backup plan all along in case it didn't work out with Flip. Now he's got a probationary period to nail down the job for next year. As mentioned in other strings what I'm really curious to see is what happens to Zim if we don't make playoffs. I have to think he's on the hot seat right and if we don't make some noise from here on out he very well may be gone. Fingers crossed that we right this ship! Skol Vikes!!!

Re: FLIP HAS BEEN FIRED!!!
Right. What excites me about Stefanski is he's worked with multiple position groups, has been here a while, knows what Mike Zimmer wants and I believe he will bring balance to this offense. Shurmur took over for Turner and within a year, turned into a very good coordinator and I think he has the giants pointing in the right direction. I hope the same for Stefanski

Re: FLIP HAS BEEN FIRED!!!
Just to play devil's advocate does anyone think Flip is a scapegoat? He didn't build this oline. Sure, the playcalling could be better but it's hard to sustain drives when you can't run and need extra blockers to give the Qb any time. Can some people please point out specifically what the play-calling issues were and how to not attribute it to Kirk missing a read, Dalvin failing to break a tackle, or the old line not being able to do anything at all?

Too early for Flip Flopped jokes?
Re: FLIP HAS BEEN FIRED!!!
I don't think it's all on him but he wasn't ready to be an OC, I don't think. Especially as part of Zimmer's staff. The Vikings need someone with more experience which, granted, isn't the person in there now that he's gone either ...Maelstrom88 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 11, 2018 2:15 pm Just to play devil's advocate does anyone think Flip is a scapegoat? Re: FLIP HAS BEEN FIRED!!!
We can run. That's the problem and something some arent seeing. Cook is averaging 4.8 YPC over the last two games on the road vs the Pats and Seahawks. I keep saying, we arent rolling out there with Matt Asiata. We have legit RBs so there is no reason why we can run the ball. Flip just constantly stayed away from it. As for giving the QB time, as I mentioned in another one of the threads, Cousins counted multiple times where Seattle dropped 9. NINE! Had 2 guys rushing. This would obviously force Cousins to check down. This was the FIRST time all year Seattle used 7 DBs. Flip was as predictable as it gets. I sat by my TV last night calling out short yardage plays right and left. You bring Murray in for the 2nd time all game, Treadwell for his blocking, and motion Ham into the backfield....I wonder what they are going to do....run up the gut.Maelstrom88 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 11, 2018 2:15 pm Just to play devil's advocate does anyone think Flip is a scapegoat? It's a walk in the park for these DCs to figure out this offense. It's obvious when we're passing and it's obvious when were running. The offense was figured out around week 6. And it's progressively gotten worse. We were the easiest team in the league to scheme for. There was no adjusting with Flip. None. He stuck with his plan and continued to push it.
Anyone blaming all this on Cousins "missing reads" are missing reads themselves. Let's be honest, most of the year and most of his career, Cousins wasnt missing open WRs. If a guy was open he was finding them. We were 9th in total offense early in the year and that was without a running game. We got figured out. Flip got exposed. Sorry but Cousins doesnt just regress like that. He's one of the more consistent QBs in the league year after year. Sending a blitz our way like NE did, destroyed this OL. Dropping 9 like Seattle did destroyed any kind of passing game we could have had last night. They ASKED us to run the ball. But still only gave cook 13 carries.
Cousins can only do so much with the playcalling. Cousins can only do so much when Diggs and Thielen are doubled and they are dropping 9, Cousins can only do so much with this OL. But it goes back to one of the tweets I saw, Flip was asking Cousins to be someone he wasnt. He put it all on Kirks shoulders when it didnt need to be

Re: FLIP HAS BEEN FIRED!!!
Yeah, we will see. Hopefully the new OC can get much better results. The schedule certainly is easier now. What would you do when they drop 9? Draws, screens, power runs? Thing is they still seemed to get pressure. I'd have to watch it again but I dint think I could take it lol. Zimmer isn't immune to criticism. He was impressed enough to hire him. He also could have made him change playcalling. Zimmer is HC not DC. Also, Cook had two plays last night where he should have broke the tackle for big yards. One on a CB the other was an arm tackle from a lber on his knees. Murray isn't a good power back either imo.Pondering Her Percy wrote: ↑Tue Dec 11, 2018 2:35 pmWe can run.
