1.11 Vikings select CB Trae Waynes, Michigan St.

Post by Pondering Her Percy »

Vikings selected Michigan State CB Trae Waynes with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft.
Defensive-minded coach Mike Zimmer has his bookend for Xavier Rhodes. Waynes (6'0/186) made 27 starts as a Spartan, amassing 13 pass breakups, six interceptions and four tackles for loss. He allowed just one touchdown pass in 2014, and was a consensus first-team All-Big Ten pick. Wayne confirmed his explosive athleticism at the Combine, blazing 4.31 with a 38-inch vertical and 10-foot-2 broad jump. Wayne has some stiffness in the hips and committed too many penalties in college, but he excels in press-man coverage and is a sure tackler. Waynes may lack elite No. 1 corner upside, but is the draft's most NFL-ready cornerback.
Absolutely love this pick. It was down to him and Parker for me but with the Bears drafting White, I leaned towards Waynes. We have one legit defensive backfield now!!!

WRs are a dime a dozen, and I think Waynes is the second best DB prospect in the draft, so I think this was an alright pick.

Sounds like we may have two corners who like to rack up penalties, hopefully they can get that under control

I am 100% with you on this pick. And as I had previously posted, there was zero chance of them taking Parker after signing Wallace.

I heard some bad things about how well he covered inside routes leading up to the draft, and I hear his change of direction (particuarly his 3 cone drill) were sorely lacking. I did find this encouraging from his nfl.com bio:
Allowed just two touchdowns over last two seasons. Bump-and-run specialist. Fastest cornerback at the NFL Scouting Combine with a 4.31 40-yard dash, showing off his recovery speed to make up for separation.
Can be intimidating and disruptive against finesse receivers. Drives forward with burst and runs through targets, jarring balls loose. Wrap-up tackler who understands his responsibility against the run.
Basically, we have a solid run defender and somebody who can cover over the top. It seems to give Harrison Smith more liberty to be a playmaker, which sound great to me.

I'm not a big fan, but I trust Zimmer and Spielman, so I will be happy to be wrong.

I'm not sold on this pick at all. He will not contribute much this season, it takes a corner 2-3 years to develop in the NFL. His tape doesn't seem that great. He gets flaged regularly. I don't think it was a great pick. I would have much rather had Parker, Gordon or traded down. I'm actually really suprised there haven't been any trades yet.

49ers traded with San Diego

Uh how do you figure?? Rhodes was a stud in year two and looked very promising in year one. Rhodes also got flagged a lot and fixed that issue by seasons end so your analysis doesn't make much sense. He allowed 2 TDs in two seasons

I wouldn't call last season a stud season for Rhodes. He did show improvement. I figure this year he will be more impresssive. I remember all of the flags at the start of the season, guess I forgot that he cleaned it up towards the end. However, thats not Waynes. I always liked the Rhodes pick. Waynes just doesn't impress me. Guess it's a wait and see until the pre-season starts.

He did? I wasn't aware Rhodes had completely got that fixed yet. I recall him getting a costly flag in the 2nd to last game against Miami.

Much better than it was at the beginning of the year

Rhodes was top 5-10 in the league in pass breakups and rarely gave up big plays. How is that not a stud season?? Because he didn't have as many INTs as you want?? Come on
