No coach ever says anything about short leashes. Matt Cassel was the "best option" at the beginning of the year simply due to experience. Not because he was a better "QB". It isn't very often where a rookie gets thrown to the wolves.
The thing is, besides fanspeak, I can't remember talk where Cassel was on a short leash. In other words, Cassel being on a short leash is just your opinion and nothing else.

Cassel played in 9 games, he started in 7. Correction, Peterson did play in the BAL game and was 7 for 13yds. But my point still stands, Cassel only had a healthy Peterson in 2 games in 2013. I still say the talent level between Cassel's 2013 Vikings and Hill's 2014 Rams were not as lopsided as you suggest.

That being said, most other teams have average of less QBs as backups. I was trying point that out by listing most of the top tier QBs and the fact that their backups are marginal at best and I can't think of even one backup that could replace those starters and lead their teams to a play-off.
Don't get me wrong, I can't see one redeemable facet of Hill either as a replacement QB. I mentioned this several months ago, but if Mariota would slip to them at 11 I would grab him up and develop him right along with TB (sort of a Favre Rodgers kind of move).
None the less that won't happen and I can't believe that the Vikes will go into this season with Hill as the only viable option as a second string QB.
Gotcha.

Seattle might be able to get to the playoffs with a #2 QB and a healthy D.

WHAT DOES IT MATTER IF HE WAS HEALTHY OR NOT??? My goodness. He still started and was still on the field in EVERY one of those games other than PHI and DET. As an opposing team, you don't go into a game planning vs Adrian Peterson the same way you do Matt Asiata. That's like saying planning for Peyton Manning is the same thing as planning for Christian Ponder. Peterson had one game under 10 carries which was in an absolute blizzard. He wasn't hurt until halfway through the second in that game. Either way, Matt Cassel still had AP behind him in every game but two which completely changes all types of game plans.

For those two games AP wasn't playing, I'll give it to Cassel he played well vs PHI but DET was coming off the week they missed the playoffs and gave the most pathetic effort I have seen in a long time. Basically because they didnt care since they were out of the playoffs. So I take that game with a grain of salt.

Wouldn't an unproductive Peterson matter? Wouldn't an ineffective Peterson put a lot more pressure on the offense, and the defense?

They were #27 in passing. Seattle wins because of their rushing attack and their defense.

and I said 'might'.

He actually started 6. He didn't start against Chicago.

Cassel's starts for the Vikings:

2013
Pittsburgh
Carolina
Philadelphia
@Baltimore
@ Cincinnati
Detroit

2014
@ St. Louis
New England
@ New Orleans (didn't finish game)

It's worth pointing out that in 4 of the 8 starts he finished, the team scored 14 points or less. The offense was stagnant or just plain awful with Cassel at QB as often as it was actually effective. His supposed ability to keep the team playing at a .500 level would have relied heavily on who they were playing.

It's also worth pointing out that they scored a lot of points in his other starts.

It will be interesting to see if he ends up being the starter in Buffalo. Ryan is saying that will be an open competition.

Pondering Her Percy wrote: Well by the looks of it....a CB is going to be selected in the first 2 rounds by us. I'm not a huge fan of Darby but man, PJ Williams is a stud. Very physical and plays some tight coverage. If we decide to go elsewhere at 11, Williams is our man in the 2nd
Florida State CB P.J. Williams was arrested for DUI in Leon County, Fla. early Friday morning.

Williams (6-foot, 194) has drawn comparisons to Bills CB Stephon Gilmore and was being talked about as a potential first-round pick. This arrest will likely knock him out of the Day 1 discussion. Williams already had off-field question marks after an October hit-and-run.

@Rand_Getlin: The #Vikings are signing long snapper Kevin McDermott, reuniting him with his college punter Jeff Locke, a source said.

Of course right when I say that last night this happens!! That sucks because I really like Williams as a player. Maybe it helps us though and allows us to get him in later rounds

Peterson could play an entire game and only get 5 carries and his presence alone causes defenses to play us differently and focus more on him. Healthy or unhealthy, he was still out there. I'm still unsure why you continue to defend Cassel like he's some prize possession when both Jim and myself have proved that he's been ineffective and really not a whole lot different from Hill. Also, it's not like Hill is some fresh body that has no clue how to run Turners offense. He's played for him in the past

Big News!!! http://www.dailynorseman.com/2015/4/3/8 ... -mcdermott
According to Rand Getlin of Yahoo! Sports, the Vikings have signed long snapper Kevin McDermott.

"McDermott played his college ball at UCLA, where he was a teammate of current. . .for the time being, anyway. . .Vikings punter Jeff Locke. He has spent time with the San Francisco 49ers, the Denver Broncos and the Baltimore Ravens during his time in the NFL. He snapped for the Ravens in two games this past season, and in seven games for the 49ers in 2013".
