The Vikings wanted Winfield, who was due to make $7.25 million in 2013, to restructure his contract, sources told ESPNTwinCities. But the three-time Pro Bowler refused to take a pay cut, according to the report.

March, 15, 2014
MINNEAPOLIS -- Coming off a frustrating season where he played much of the year with a broken left wrist and heading into a season where he was due to count $8.2 million against the Vikings' salary cap, 31-year-old linebacker Chad Greenway seemed like a possible candidate to restructure his deal with the team. Now, he has

Winfield was arguably our best defensive player, and it showed once he was gone, so it's not at all the same situation. He was aging, but still playing at a high level. Greenway has not at all been playing at a high level. He wasn't even our best linebacker last year, which was the worst position group on the team.

Oddly enough, these problems - poor closing speed and reaction time, improper angles - seemed to be a problem I felt the entire Vikings defense exhibited last year.

I think that also supports Slick Rick's point about Greenway being negatively affected by the lack of help around him. Not that Greenway hasn't faded, it's just that I thought the entire D was playing Keystone Cop defense too often last season. Maybe Greenway got caught in the middle of the ineptitude.

I don't think Greenway is a leader among LBs. I think hes just good enough, but he has to have a supporting group of LBs around him. Back when our defense was top 5, he had playmakers all around him. EJ Henderson, Leber, Both williams on the line, Jared Allen, antoine, etc...

Our defense has been terrible to say the least. Sure Greenway has gotten a "free pass" over the last couple years, but how do you NOT like the guy who puts out 100% week in and week out knowing hes going to get his butt kicked.

I wouldn't write him off yet. New team, new coach, new players, new playbook, new everything.

Fresh start out of everyone. This will be a great year to grade out or players and see how much talent we really do have.

In Zimmer we trust.
