Anyone who can't beat out Cassel probably isn't worth drafting. If we draft a qb in the 1st or 2nd round he should be the starter game 1.
Nope Turners system is complicated give the rookie a little while to get settled in.
I wonder also how much Turner will work to improve Ponder?

This is a new regime, a new year, and if Norv thinks that Ponder is the best QB on the roster for whatever reason, I would expect that that's who he'd use. We don't need to get caught up in last year, or his rookie year, or the handful of games where he was mediocre in 2012, because they honestly don't matter any more than Matt Cassel's stats from 2 years ago with the Chiefs, or from 6 years ago with New England.
I predict Matt Cassel will win the job, unless a rookie like JFB/TBW/Bortles comes in and steals the job during training camp. Ponder just doesn't seem like he can put it together as a pro, but I think Norv Turner likes him a little bit, and believes that he has a chance at winning the job this year or at least maybe platooning with Cassel. I don't disagree with him, because Ponder is good at certain things (other than interceptions), whether we like to admit it or not. He can move around and make plays when there isn't one down the field, he has a decent arm, and when he's on a roll sometimes he looks downright unstoppable. I could still see him being what we thought he was going to be, but he isn't going to get the benefit of the doubt like he did the last 2 years.
One question on my Mind: Can Cassel stay healthy all season?
That's funny. Holmgren wanted to bench Favre many times early in his career but Mooch had to talk him out of it. If it hadn't been for Mooch there, Farve may have never made it.
I have nothing against Ponder as a man but hope he is not the starting QB. Saw him play a lot while at FSU and both my son and I cringed when the Vikings drafted him. He is mainly a 1, max 2 read guy who has trouble if the DBs for the other team are as athletic as his receivers. Saw this multiple times in college and it has played out in the pros.
I have the same concern about Bridgewater. JFB makes plays but I am not sure he will be professional enough to still be in the league in 6 years. Bortles, for me, has a chance to be pretty good, but it will take a year before he is ready to take the helm.

I will admit that QB analysis is my weakest point so, for all I know, Bortles will be great. I have had to rely on what I have read about him and frankly, I am concerned. If I have to hear another time about his frame as a reason he is a match for the Vikings I will...I willl.....continue to be annoyed.
The last thing I heard on the radio was the Bortles had a great build and size/strength combo, and then that "if he can improve his accuracy" he has a chance to be very good.
So he looks the part but he's not very accurate? I don't know, I'm not saying he's bad but I'm still waiting to hear something good about him that doesn't revolve around his physical size.
He might end up being a terrific NFL quarterback but he's the "top" QB prospect who concerns me most as a possible choice for the Vikings because his size seems to be the main reason he's ranked highly. I know it's not the only reason but if he was built like Bridgewater or Manziel, I seriously doubt he'd be ranked toward the top of the first round.

He has the same size and arm as one Mr. Ryan Leaf.
Do not mistake KINDNESS for WEAKNESS!
Best to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool rather than open it and remove all doubt.

What's the basis for thinking Bortles has accuracy problems? His 9.4 ypa average and nearly 68% completion rate look comparable to the other top QBs.

Bortles' best throws are on the shorter passes (15 yards and less). The further downfield he throws, the less accurate he becomes. His ability to throw the deep ball is average at best. Many of his longer plays, that I saw, were actually shorter passes with long runs after the catch. He has good arm strength, but he does not have a cannon. While he can throw a tight ball, he also throws a lot of balls that “flutter”.
It should be obvious to everyone, but he's still being reported as a possible top 10 pick. It was obviously with Ponder and he went in the 1st. Some team, maybe even the Vikings, will think they can coach him up and maybe a light will go on and he'll be an elite QB. Fat chance. Him and Carr look like freshmen, not guys entering the NFL draft! Accuracy issues. Looked lost when they actually had to go beyond their first read. Seemed to have no clue what the defense was doing most of the time. And one of them is a possible top 10 pick? Maybe even to the Vikings?
