I would be very happy with Mosley if that were to be the case. I dont care how many LB's we currently have on the roster. They are all mediocre at best and not a single one of them can cover a tight end. For that matter, I would not be all that upset if we took a LB with our 2nd round pick as well. Defense, Defense, Defense and then take a QB.S197 wrote:Daniel Jeremiah and Charles Davis mock draft has both Bortles and Bridgewater falling out of the top 10. Manziel only QB taken. Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
i can't even believe you guys mention ponder with a straight face. he is/was the worst starting qb in the nfl aside from sanchez and maybe gabbert. no coaching staff can fix him he is horrible. for the most part, cassel did not look that bad in the majority of the games that he started (he came in and backed up bum #7 a couple of times). he looked bad against cincy, but ponder has looked bad against pretty much everyone the last 2 years. its odd the first game cassel starts jennings has 2 tds and hadn't had any the previous 4 games. anyone find that odd? cassel will be the starter and he should be the starter so all you ponder hopefuls just give it up already. he'll never start another game in a viking uniform unless cassel gets hurt and for my money he'd be lucky to ever start another game in the nfl period.

Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
Carr intrigues me simply because of his arm and leadership. Bortles does nothing for me. There isn't much that I like about his game. As I have said before, I want either Teddy, Mettenberger, or Carr....with an outside shot of Garoppolo or McCarron. Murray I'm not sure if I trust yet but I will truly be upset if we took Bortles. I'm starting to believe, as well as analysts, that Teddy will fall right on our laps come the end of the 1st or early second round.Demi wrote:Because Ponder would do better if he had to read more of the field? Bortles and Carr looked so lost when I watched them in games, can't believe Bortles is touted as the best QB in the draft. Guess these two look a lot better in shorts with no pass rush.

If Teddy is there at the end of the first do you all think we move back into the first and draft him? Or too many other holes on the roster and you stay put and save the draft picks?

Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
Sid Hartman is a legend.
This article and video combo illustrates that in spades: 1) What he writes in the article is then completely contradicting in the video. He writes a feel good piece on Zimmer being pleased by his new team's talent and then in the video grumbles that they won't know what they have until the first game! He also laments the loss of Kevin Williams and (wait for it) Chris Cook, stating that we'll miss both.
2) his take on what they'll do in the draft may actually have some merit to it. He says they don't like Manziel as a person and that they won't draft any QB at 8. His pick is Barr.

I love the interaction between these two in the video. It always cracks me up.

Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
Anyone else here on the "anyone but Bortles" train? I'm not a fan of taking any of the QBs that high but I could live with Bridgewater or Manziel. I just don't want Bortles. 90% of the mock drafts I've looked at recently have Bortles at #8.
Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
Seems we have 7 trains when it comes to picking a QB at #8.Vikings28 wrote:Anyone else here on the "anyone but Bortles" train? Bortles or nobody at #8.
Manziel or nobody at #8.
Bridgewater or nobody at #8.
Anyone but Bortles at #8.
Anyone but Manziel at #8.
Anyone but Bridgewater at #8.
No QB in this draft at #8.
As usual, I got up late, so I'm on the last train.

Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
Bears GM Phil Emery revealed he recently did a "study" that showed late-round quarterback draft picks aren't worth the trouble.
Some people seem to believe late-round QBs can be "developed," but it doesn't happen. "That developmental theory doesn't hold a whole lot of water," Emery said. "So who has gotten developed? There isn't a single quarterback after the third round since 2006 that has been a long-term starter. ... And most of them (third-round QBs) have been wiped out of the league." Emery's analysis doesn't bode well for the likes of Keith Wenning (Ball State) and Brett Smith (Wyoming).

Thought this was interesting...and truthful.

Especially liked hearing about the changes around Winter Park and Spielman talking about the draft. He promises they'll be taking BPA.
Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
From the Pioneer Press:
Rick Spielman: To draft a QB or not is a tough call for Vikings' GM
"It's no bigger a draft than any other draft,'' he said. "I don't think you ever go in and say this draft is bigger than the next draft.''
With that in mind, if Spielman passes on drafting a quarterback high this year, it could make next year's draft another very important one. That's when there could be a stronger quarterback class, one that could include Florida State's Jameis Winston, Oregon's Marcus Mariota and UCLA's Brett Hundley.

"Could" be second-guessed? I think it's safe to say he will be second-guessed.For now, the top prospects are Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel, Bortles, Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater and perhaps Fresno State's Derek Carr. Manziel is a good bet to be gone by the time the Vikings pick, perhaps leaving them with their choice of the rest of the lot.
Minnesota has not boxed itself in to have to take a quarterback at No. 8 due to re-signing Matt Cassel to a two-year deal. But the Vikings, who will pick at No. 40 in the second round and have two third-round picks, are almost certain to take a signal caller at some point in the draft.
So a key is evaluating how much separation there is between the top guys and the next tier of prospects, which includes Alabama's AJ McCarron, LSU's Zach Mettenberger, Eastern Illinois' Jimmy Garoppolo and Pittsburgh's Tom Savage.
"There's not one every year at that position, an Andrew Luck or a Peyton Manning that comes out,'' Spielman said. "As you go through this class, there's a lot of very good quarterbacks, but what's the significant difference between No. 1 on your board and No. 6 or 7 on your board? Then is there one guy that we really feel strongly about that is the franchise guy or not?''
Whatever Spielman does, he could be second-guessed.

Aaron Donald - DL - Player
SI's Peter King says the Vikings want a front-seven disruptor at No. 8 overall.
King says the Vikes "are more inclined than ever" to get a quarterback in the second round, not with their top pick. He suggests Pittsburgh DT Aaron Donald as a possible target at No. 8 and in terms of disruption from the interior, they wouldn't be able to do any better. Donald, who has drawn some Geno Atkins comparisons, had 11 sacks, 28.5 tackles for a loss, four forced fumbles and three batted passes as a senior at Pitt last year.
