Exactly, that's why I think we should wait until at least the 4th or later if the top 3 aren't there. In fact, I think I'd be ok skipping on JB at 8.S197 wrote: My issue is when you sit at a pick like #8, you can grab the best guy in the draft at a particular position. If this team was a QB away from championship caliber, then maybe you consider the reach but at this point it doesn't make a whole lot of sense taking the 3rd or 4th best QB when you can possibly take the top LB, CB, S, WR, etc. in the draft. There's enough holes in the roster that you can fill BPA and need at the same time.
Someone in the tier 2 group (Carr, Jimmy, Mett) will be around in the 2nd and I don't really see a whole lot of separation between the guys in this tier, certainly not enough to reach for one at 8.

The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps.

In a draft class that's very deep at many positions apart from QB, the same argument could be used in the 2nd round at pick #40. That's what I'm getting at... that the Vikings may go BPA in not only the 1st, but also the 2nd, even the 3rd round. At which point they're not looking for their QB of the future. If they take one in the middle or late rounds, he's obviously just a hopeful.S197 wrote: My issue is when you sit at a pick like #8, you can grab the best guy in the draft at a particular position. Many people will argue that _any_ draft pick is just a hopeful, and that's correct, but it should by now be painfully obvious how it works. When you use a top 10 pick on someone, you ride him out, as with the Vikings' most recent failed QB draft pick. A top 50 pick gets similar consideration, just to a lesser degree. A pick at #40 could be someone they'd consider starting if Cassel or whoever falters. Beyond the 2nd round, I think the guy watches no matter what, and may not even be second on the depth chart.

Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
I have been thinking this way for awhile also. Draft a QB in third round or later and focus on D in the first couple picks. I feel next years QB class is a bit deeper and better so if (and hopefully not) we end up with a top 10 draft pick again we have a chance for a great QB and were not wasting a top ten pick (or top 40 pick) from this year.

Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
Anyone other then Teddy, and I would just wait on Zach M. Let him heal while we play at TCF. Let Norv and Cassel tutor him. I think Zack may have the best arm Norv has had a chance to coach. Bortles and Carr aernt worth the 1st or 2nd. Jimmy is, but that's just me. Safe bet is Zach in the 3rd. And Murray never.
Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
I like Mettenberger too but I'm starting to think the guy will go higher than most are predicting. It would be nice if he's there at the top of the 3rd but I have a feeling someone will take him in the 2nd round despite the injury and off-field stuff.PurpleKoolaid wrote:Anyone other then Teddy, and I would just wait on Zach M. I think we wait till the second round at least for a QB pick now that we have Cassel back
I am guessing 5 picks we be defensive if not more this year

That's what im thinking too. And that's why Im afraid they will be looking at Murray in the 3rd. And Id rather have Ponder then him, even after he heals up.S197 wrote: I like Mettenberger too but I'm starting to think the guy will go higher than most are predicting. Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
Yep. Reminds me of Ponder. We already have Ponder on contract, why would we want version 2.0 with a torn acl? Mett can throw the ball ball further then both of them combined, in the pocket, with pressure, and accurately enough to give the receiver a chance to catch the ball. I doubt Murray can even see over the line, unless he has perfected the jump pass.

Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
The difference between Murray and Ponder is that Murray isn't afraid to take shots. He also has a killer instinct, which Ponder does not have. I like Murray, but I don't love him though.

I really hope he means this, Spielman is a good poker player this time of the year.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/20 ... arterback/Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman suggested that his team might be more interested in addressing another position in the first round of the draft, and taking a quarterback on the second day of the draft.
“I think you can find quarterbacks in the second round and the third round, as well,” Spielman told the Star Tribune. “We’ve started that process on the evaluation part. I think we’re scheduled to go out there and see a lot of these quarterbacks through the spring and get to know them a little bit better. The one thing that I want to make sure we don’t do is box ourselves into having to take a quarterback if there’s another player that’s very significant at another position.”

^Really?
I love that idea. Been saying that's what they should do all along...Unless of course Teddy falls. That's the only guy I'll waiver for.

He's also said he's not ruling himself out of taking one at 8, and if there's one there he thinks has value at 8, he'll take him. Basically he's not going to reach for one like he did with Ponder. If the board plays out and the guy or guys he likes at 8 are gone, he'll draft another position.S197 wrote:I really hope he means this, Spielman is a good poker player this time of the year.

It's pretty much all meaningless blather when everyone's cards are on the table. It's not like other teams will be saying "Oh my God, we didn't know he also had the 9th pick!". It's all there to see.S197 wrote:I really hope he means this, Spielman is a good poker player this time of the year.

How many of the projected top 10 picks do we think this coachiing staff likes?
And is there any defensive player worth taking over a 1st rnd QB?

A successful coach needs a patient wife, loyal dog, and great quarterback - and not necessarily in that order.
