Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
I've watched plenty of tape on him and i like him with our second round pick, anywhere in the first round is too much, let alone with the 8th pick. He has all of the physical tools to be a solid player but there are too many question marks with him to make him a 1st rounder. I think he's over rated because there is no elite QB in this draft to contrast against all of the others, therefore bumping up all of there value. Just think if Mariota and Hundley came out we'd be talking about Carr as a guaranteed 2nd to 3rd rounder. people aren't ranking QBs off of the big picture, they are rating them against there own class and desperation of teams without a franchise QB.

and when you rate QB's that way you end up with Christian Ponder, Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert types going way higher than if they were viewed with the big picture in mind.

Teddy Bridgewater - QB - Player
A league source tells the Florida Times Union that the Jaguars are unlikely to use a first-round pick on a quarterback after re-signing Chad Henne to a two-year contract on Friday.
There is increasing chatter that quarterbacks are going to fall in the draft, and the slides could be expedited if QB-needy teams like Jacksonville suddenly pull out of the derby. Of course, this is Lying Season in the NFL, making it difficult to trust anonymous "league sources." Stated the source, "With Henne back, I don't expect them to take QB until 2nd round and maybe not until 3rd or 4th round." It's worth noting that the source's quarterback expectation would be similar to the path that led the Seahawks to Russell Wilson. Gus Bradley was Seattle's defensive coordinator at the time. He's now the Jaguars' head coach.

I know what you mean but even though there are some mock drafts suggesting that Carr will be drafted in the top 10, those are guesses based on the assumption that QB-needy teams will use their first picks on QBs. I don't think there are many people who actually have Carr rated that high or who consider him more than a marginal first round pick. That said, all of these ratings are subjective anyway and results are what matter most.Loki wrote:and when you rate QB's that way you end up with Christian Ponder, Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert types going way higher than if they were viewed with the big picture in mind.
Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
If we spend #8 on Carr I don't know what I'd do. I'd like to say I'd be done with the team but we all know that probably isn't true but I couldn't be any more disappointed. If we spend our 2nd rounder on him I'll just cry a little bit, maybe call for Spielmans head. To me this guy just looks like a total bust, there really isn't any round I'd feel good about taking him in unless it was like a Ryan Mallet thing and he's some how there in round 4 or 5.
The first three minutes of that video pretty much tells you everything you need to know and wow is it ugly. Throws off his back foot pretty much routinely, same rainbow deep ball Ponder has and I agree 100% with the TJackson mechanics comparison. For such a big arm he is not getting much out of those throws.
Usually I think Demi is way over the top and kind of outrageous
but when it comes to Carr I couldn't agree more, please stay away Vikings!

Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
The first part of the video is intended to be ugly and absolutely does not tell you everything you need to know. It's a compilation of throws of Carr throwing off his back foot to illustrate that he did it too often. In that sense, it's no different than a compilation of nothing but TD passes would be... neither would be representative of his overall performance.mondry wrote:If we spend #8 on Carr I don't know what I'd do. The video doesn't even include anything from Carr's senior (and best) season. It's not indicative of where he is in his development now.

Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
I would like to know what Norv thinks of these QB's.

Don't hate on my Buckeyes. Some of the best Vikings went to Ohio State.
Including now, HOF WR #80 Cris Carter
Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
I can see just about any of the QB's falling although I think Bortles has the least likely chance. There's so many good players at other positions at the top of this draft and I don't think any one QB is standing out head and shoulders above the rest.
Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
This draft just isn't looking terribly strong in the QB department. Has anyone given much consideration to the possibility that the Vikings won't attempt to draft their next franchise QB in this draft? If they end up taking a QB in, say, the 3rd or 4th or 5th round, there won't be many people expecting that QB to be a star. He's going to be a development prospect, at best, or a future backup or complete washout at worst.
Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
Sure, I think many of us have considered the possibility that the Vikings won't draft a QB this year with the expectation that he'll become their franchise QB. That said, I think it's likely they'll draft one they think has the potential to become their future starter and not just a guy whose ceiling is as a backup. It may be a player like Garoppolo who isn't ready to take the main stage (and may never be) but who could develop into a franchise QB.Eli wrote:This draft just isn't looking terribly strong in the QB department. That said, who knows how long Garoppolo will even last in the draft? Bill Polian thinks he could end up being drafted in the latter part of the first round.

Speaking of Garoppolo, here's a Bleacher Report article about his pro day:

Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
These are my thoughts exactly. I'm nervous about hitching our wagons to a first rounder from this draft, and I hope the Cassel signing relieves some of the pressure to do so. I'd much prefer a Murray, Mettenburger, Garoppolo, etc in the 2nd round or later, sitting behind Cassel for a year or two. I just don't trust any of he top three QBs in this draft to become anything better than an average NFL starter. Of course, the later round QB pick may not work out either, but we have so many needs on this team I just really prefer spending that pick on a player with a higher likelihood of becoming a solid starter/contributor for the next decade.Mothman wrote: Sure, I think many of us have considered the possibility that the Vikings won't draft a QB this year with the expectation that he'll become their franchise QB. I suppose I may be a bit "gun shy" from the Ponder draft.

Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
My issue is when you sit at a pick like #8, you can grab the best guy in the draft at a particular position. If this team was a QB away from championship caliber, then maybe you consider the reach but at this point it doesn't make a whole lot of sense taking the 3rd or 4th best QB when you can possibly take the top LB, CB, S, WR, etc. in the draft. There's enough holes in the roster that you can fill BPA and need at the same time.Eli wrote:This draft just isn't looking terribly strong in the QB department. Someone in the tier 2 group (Carr, Jimmy, Mett) will be around in the 2nd and I don't really see a whole lot of separation between the guys in this tier, certainly not enough to reach for one at 8.
