Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
I think we finally have a real coaching staff compared to the last three Tice, Childress, and Frazier
In think we have some great pieces already .. really hoping we can keep griffen on defense and Cassel
the rest of the FA's (yes including Allen and Willams) not really care about
due to age or expense, or both

Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
I would still love for them to trade out, and get more ammo for next year, but NFL teams can't be long sighted sadly, as Guys want to win now even if it's done hastily and doesn't assure a large window. The more I see this years first round, the more I am starting to hate it, at least the way it's projected to shake out. And despite what we saw from Seattle Sunday night, you still need a decent QB to handle things. If they have 2 firsts next year, they might get lucky and have one be very high, and have 2 firsts to spend, if not package them both and get up there high. A new coach needs a stable QB asap, or it turns out like Chilly and Frazier.PacificNorseWest wrote:I'm beginning to wonder if Minnesota should trade down.
I feel like this draft is extremely deep, but top heavy for certain players and then a no man's land from picks anywhere from 7-15. After that there is huge value that may help Minnesota if they traded down and grabbed another 2nd or third rounder.
Before the combine it's hard to pinpoint because things can change quite a bit, but I think Garoppolo will be there in the 2nd round if that's someone they really like. They should also be able to grab a quality DT if they moved down in the first as well. Between Nix, Hageman and Jernigan, there's great value.

Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
One thing I'm trying to grapple with is how they would handle things if they did draft khalil mack. He's got the size to play inside but he's rated as an OLB. So the question becomes do you put him on the weak side and let Mauti and Cole battle it out in the middle. If that's the case do you take him off the field in nickel situations? Do you put him on the strong side and try to trade Greenway and just let Hodges and Mitchell or someone else battle it out on the weak side? I think mack would be a good pick I just don't know how they would use him right now.

I think they have to draft at leas 2 LBs along the way, and let them all battle for spots. But coach will be key in evaluating if they have the players for his defense. They didn't really have the LBs for Fraziers system, so maybe they fit better for Zimms.MrPurplenGold wrote:One thing I'm trying to grapple with is how they would handle things if they did draft khalil mack. Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
The more I look into CB prospects in this years draft class, the less impressed I am. The only one I am really intrigued by is Jean-Baptiste. I feel like this is a very weak class and I think it's starting to become a must that we land one of the top CBs (Verner, Talib, Shields, etc)

I'm really starting to believe there is a very good chance Bridgewater or Manziel fall to us at 8. Granted, this is no guarantee, but at the same time, there have now been reports linking Cousins to Cleveland, Sanchez to Oakland, Freeman to Oakland, and Schaub to Oakland.
I think there might be something to this. I've read more than once over the past several days, that Cleveland might pare Sammy Watkins with Gordon and nab their QB at the #26 spot.
That leaves Houston and Jax grabbiing a QB, and that's if Houston passes on Clowney, which they probably will.
A successful coach needs a patient wife, loyal dog, and great quarterback - and not necessarily in that order.

All the mock drafts, just the Vikings first pick. a few second picks as well.

Don't hate on my Buckeyes. Some of the best Vikings went to Ohio State.
Including now, HOF WR #80 Cris Carter

Carr in the second is alright but not at #8. I like the Walter Football mock but there's no way Verrett drops to the 3rd.

Hope we stay away from anyone whos last name ends with RR in the first round at least. Yes, that means Carr and Barr. Was trying to be clever, but failure. Thats what no sleep for 2 days gets me.S197 wrote: A lot of people picking Carr![]()

I prefer Jimmy G over Carr. Which means Rickie prolly has Carr targeted. I sure hope someone on the new staff knows something about QBs, because Rickie doesn't.

I'm pretty sure Norv Turner does. And Carr is the 2nd is a steal in my eyes. He's been growing on me. Monster arm, athletic, great work ethic, a leader, etc. I would take Carr over Garappolo but I definitely wouldnt be upset if we took GarappoloPurpleKoolaid wrote:I prefer Jimmy G over Carr. Carr is terrible and won't be better than a below average starter in the NFL...

Terrible huh?? And how do you figure....because he had a "bad game" vs USC and will sometimes struggle under pressure?? Pretty much the same thing everyone says. Sorry but I'm not buying it and that doesn't make a guy "terrible".
What about his arm strength?
Athleticism?
Accuracy?
Footwork?
Release?
....and most of all, his intangibles (passion for the game, determination, maturity, intelligence, work ethic, leadership and poise)?
Those are all very strong points for Derek Carr so where you're coming up with your "he's terrible" comments is beyond me. Sorry but 1 game doesn't determine a guys career. I'm not sure I would take him in the 1st round, but maybe if we traded down. He would be a STEAL in the 2nd round IMO. I think Turner could work wonders with a guy like Carr.

Watching the guy play? Not reading a few websites and watching some youtube highlights?....
Re: 2014 Vikings Draft Discussion
There is simply no way Carr's footwork is a strong point for him, it's downright awful. His arm is elite, there should be no question about that. His athleticism and accuracy I would say is about average but difficult to judge given his competition and the amount of easy throws he made at Fresno. Basically he looks like a slightly less athletic Tarvaris Jackson to me. Maybe he has more between the ears than Jackson but in terms of their game and tangibles, it's pretty similar.
