Haha, ya just can't make this stuff up. Blast from the past:

from http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/feed/20 ... -practices

"With the padded practices for the Senior Bowl completed, nearly all the NFL types have left Mobile. The game is on Saturday, but for pro scouts, the three padded practices carry the most weight. Below is a breakdown of the nine players who struggled the most this week:

Russell Wilson, QB, Wisconsin, 5-10½, 203, 4.60; projected free agent.
Russell Wilson tallied 33 touchdowns and four interceptions in 2011 but underwhelmed in Senior Bowl practices. After a great senior season in which he led Wisconsin to the Rose Bowl, Wilson did not fare as well at the Senior Bowl. It started off badly when he measured under 5-11, and then he struggled with accuracy throughout the week. He showed good mechanics to get rid of the ball quickly and a very strong arm to make every NFL throw without a problem. However, teams can’t ignore his height and lack of consistency as a pocket passer. He likely won’t be drafted because his performance this week showed that he will be, at best, a backup quarterback in the NFL.

Blog writers for Yahoo sports are now the "experts" Now the guy may in fact be right... by being lucky, but what does a guy who has never played the game know about evaluating talent?

Wow great point! I remember Wilson was never talked about much coming into the draft. Regardless of what anyone else says, I'm still a huge Tajh Boyd fan. I think he could be a Russell Wilson type sleeper. The thing that sticks out to me most about him is his how consistent he has been throughout his career. He is a very smooth passer similar to Wilson that has struggled a bit with accuracy at times. BOLD PREDICTION- Tajh Boyd will be an NFL starter within the next 2-3 years

LOL! Thanks for posting that. It's a great illustration of why we should never put too much stock in things like Senior Bowl practices or even media pre-draft analysis in general.

I thought highly of Boyd until I watched his game vs. Florida St. where this relatively unheralded (at that point) Freshman outshone him hardcore. Boyd was throwing McNabb type bounce passes all over the field and just looked horrible in general. I haven't been able to consider him as a feasible option since that game.

Me personally, I always thins Senior Bowls are to look at players who are not high on the draft boards. Most of the best players come to the draft as underclassmen. Sometimes I think some seniors need an extra game to show of their skill set. Not all of them start but they are still eligible for the draft. That being said, it's not too many senior bowl players I would take in the 1st round. I would only look at most of these guys for depth not starting roles

I hear ya, that was a bad game for him. But at the same time you have to remember it was against the best team in the country and if you look at Boyd's career as a whole, it's very solid. For the most part, he has been pretty consistent

It would be interesting to see a correlation between draft position and school year. I'd imagine there really isn't one. Plenty of seniors are drafted in the draft's first round. And plenty of seniors not drafted in the first round end up as solid starters (in addition to backups and guys out of the league). Talent is talent. Harrison Smith was at the Senior Bowl. He turned out relatively OK. Same for Russel Wilson. And countless others. As a GM, I wouldn't hold it against anyone for attending. Just gives you more opportunity to scout/interview. You can never have too much information. And you can't hold it against guys that want another chance to impress.

Plus, what are there, 104 guys on the senior bowl roster? Obviously most of them won't be first-rounders by sheer numbers alone. I think there are something like 98 underclassmen declaring this year too (I believe it's a record). It'll likely be a mix, as it is every year.

By the way, the Vikings met with Garappolo yesterday for quite some time if you guys didn't know.

For the most I think we can all agree on this. I definitely think a few guys will sneak into the first though, like Harrison Smith did. Someone will take Carr first round most likely.

Posted this same observation in another thread, but should have posted it here.

Saw a few mock drafts with most of them having the Vikes taking Carr in the first.

Yeah that's all that's out there. I'm taking it with a grain of salt. They know we need a QB so they just throw us the next best but I don't think it will turn out that way

Heard a clip from Spielman on NFL Radio this morning saying they won't drat a quarterback at 8 just to draft one and that they'll be looking to go best player available. He also noted that this week (Senior Bowl) and then their evaluations moving forward will tell them about the potential value of some of the Q's in this draft in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

Good news to me. That would be my gameplan exactly. Hopefully that's how it's executed.

Yeah that's great news thanks for sharing. Like I've said before, I highly doubt Spielman reaches this year. He has seen what can come of that. Unless Teddy or JFB somehow fell to them, I think it's a lock he goes elsewhere in the 1st round.

I remember Rickie saying there was no way they were trading PH too. His word means very little.

I think it's all part of him being discrete about things. He's been good when it comes to that. I'd rather him be discrete than telling the world what he's doing. It keeps distractions limited
