No, the Vikings were a QB and half of a defense away from being contenders in 2013.
I disagree. I think the Vikings were a QB OR half a defense away from being contenders in 2013.
If we had have half our defense fixed, we win a lot, if not all, of the games we lost on last minute drives. But if we had a QB, we win those games too. In almost all those games this year, we had a chance as an offense to earn a couple first downs and end the game, not having to rely on our defense. A real QB gets that done with the talent we have on offense.

well, I suppose it depends on whether we're talking about NFC North contenders or Super Bowl contenders.

I get what you're saying but that's a bit too simple. Consider the way the game at Lambeau went in the 4th quarter. Ponder threw a perfect deep ball to Patterson late in that quarter that could have set up a game-sealing score and Patterson dropped it. There was also a dropped TD in overtime...
... or consider the close loss at Baltimore. The offense scored 2 TDs in the final two minutes and that still wasn't enough to seal the win.
There were issues on offense late in games at QB and issues on offense that went beyond the quarterbacks. I don't think either half a defense or a QB was going to make the Vikes real contenders (as in Super Bowl contenders). They needed... and still need... both.
They didn't lose all their games on last minute drives. With as many points as the defense gave up this year, they would have needed a Peyton Manning record setting performance for the offense to keep up. The defense couldn't get off the field much of the time.
We were close in a lot of games. Our D fell apart in 4 games that we lost that we shouldn't have. Our QB play and D fell apart in 2 more. That would put us in the playoffs. If we had played Cassel from the start, and played our corners, Rhodes and Cook like they should have been played, we could have won our division. A lot of what ifs. But we get a NT, anyone other then Johnson, and back off the prevent, with this new coaching staff, we may so a lot better then some here think. A rookie QB isn't going to do it in 1 year. We don't have a Luck to draft.

Playoff contenders for sure. We likely couldn't beat the seahawks or niners like that but I completely agree we win a lot more games fixing one of our three major problems. (QB, Defense, Coaches)

Oh definitely, I didn't mean we'd still be playing now.

Playoff contenders in a division that 8 wins won. With the top two teams losing their starting QB for periods of time. Whoopee. Wow are we close.

The fever broke; glad you're feeling better buddy!

Doesn't it ever get tiring to read how close we are? How great all our players are? How every possible Qb in the draft is a great pick? Ever?

It's the damn offseason right now dude and you still have something to complain about. We are simply discussing the positives going into next year and what we think might happen. We also discuss what players we think can make impacts next year. That's the point of a forum. Nobody is sitting there saying every player we have is great. Nor is anyone saying that every QB pick is a great pick. There are a handful of QBs in this draft that I don't like. Same goes for others. I have no clue where you are getting all of this. Why don't you try being civil for once and not complaining about every damn thing we talk about. Do you not realize that you are by far the most negative person on here and rarely have anything positive to say? 99% of the forum is just sick of reading it and yes it is very, very tiring.
