FFS, what the hell is with the league wide infatuation with Dan Quinn? Gus Bradley built that defense. Quinn merely inherited a pre-molded unit that was raring to go from day one. Dan Quinn will not amount to jack in the NFL as a head coach - book it.

There are reports everywhere saying Caldwell is now the frontrunner for the job but I'm betting Schefter is just playing the odds with that tweet.

Mike Munchak reportedly had a strong interview with the Lions and is now considered a dark horse candidate to land that job as well. It will be interesting to see who they hire.

I wonder if Whisenhunt's decision to take the Titans job says something about his view of the Lions organization and perhaps Stafford as well. I've heard a lot of talking heads say the Detroit job is the most appealing of those available but a friend and I were discussing it the other day and we were saying that's only true if a coach wants to commit to Stafford as his QB and if he believes the Lions as an organization can help him build a winner. Since they have 2 winning seasons this century, it's easy to understand why a coach might hesitate to take that job.

That's true. Though I can't help but believe that $$ played a large factor in the decision. It might be interesting to compare the salaries of Whisenhunt and Caldwell when they come to light. Perhaps the city of Detroit played a factor as well for him and his family. We all know Jared Allen's feelings of the place.

I LOL'd at that Lions hire of Caldwell until I heard that if Zimmer is the man in Minnesota, he's bringing Linehan with him to be the OC. That sucks.

This team will be defensive minded for sure.

The city itself is an angle I hadn't considered but that's a good point. As you said, money might have been a factor too...

True of any team with a "franchise" QB. You'd have to accept him or butt heads with the GM. As for the organization in Detroit, their only failing was with the previous GM. Since then, they've drafted well and have a host load of talent on that team.

I did a Google news search before I wrote that post and it came up empty. I obviously timed it just right to miss the news since the same search now shows what you're saying: the Lions have hired Caldwell. As Maxwell Smart would say, "Missed it by that much..."

Lions' hire may give Vikings luxury of time

At this moment, now that the Detroit Lions have hired Jim Caldwell as their next head coach, the Minnesota Vikings are one of two teams still searching for a head coach. The other is the Cleveland Browns, who just fired Rob Chudzinski after one season and have to explain to candidates why they should trust the team.

There's a strong case to be made that the Vikings' job is the better of the two, and at this point only one of the team's known candidates (former Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden) has accepted a job elsewhere.
