Re: 2014 Current and Potential Coaches
Why is this starting to feel like a scramble of over-eager reporters guessing who the Vikes will hire rather than reports based on facts?

There are a lot of 'hedge words' in the article. ("are believed" - "Vikings might not" - "appear to be poised").
I've told people a million times not to exaggerate!

amen to that.........I think because of Fraziers hire, Spielman is going to go thru the process with the pretense of due diligence but, as that process continues he will lose the best candidates to attrition as they sign else where. This idea of making a list of 3 candidates to choose from is B.S. If Spielman interviews a candidate and believes he is the best person for the job.....then he needs to grow some nuggets and make the damn hire. If he does not like the candidate, pass and move on to the next one but either way he will be held accountable for the hireDirtyswabby wrote:I get this gut feeling that Zimmer won't leave Tennessee without a contract from the titans, I would really like to snag Zimmer but I think the FO is going to take their sweet time and we will be left with whatever is left.

I would much rather have Ray Horton than Todd Bowles. Horton had success with Arizona's defense with less talent, and immensely improved Cleveland's defense this past season.

So we want Spielman/Wilfs to take more time than they did with Childress/Frazier. But not TOO MUCH time. What's the right amount of days/number of interviews?radar55 wrote: amen to that.........I think because of Fraziers hire, Spielman is going to go thru the process with the pretense of due diligence but, as that process continues he will lose the best candidates as they sign else where. I don't understand why narrowing down to three is BS? If you believe the media reports, Zimmer and Bowles are two of the three finalists. They're not taking an incredible amount of time in my eyes. How many head coaches have been hired compared to positions open? Two out of seven? (Gruden, Smith). Let's not freak out just yet.

Like I said in this thread or god knows...another coaching thread. I think ARZ took their time and "settled" for Arians

Re: 2014 Current and Potential Coaches
The issue of time has NOTHING to do with the process of hiring the next head coach....the issue is whether or not Spielman can properly IDENTIFY the correct type of coach to lead this team. If the 1st person Spielman interviewed was (in his opinion) the best person for the job....he should have been hired. But to expect that person to sit around while others are going thru the process is B.S. because they likely wont be available anymore when the Vikings are ready to make a decision. This all comes down to Spielman knowing that he is going to be held accountable for this hire and he simply wants to be able to cover his arse. Even if that means losing the best option elsewhere.dead_poet wrote: So we want Spielman/Wilfs to take more time than they did with Childress/Frazier. But not TOO MUCH time. Arians is a damn good football coach though. I'm sure they were happy to get him.NextQuestion wrote:Like I said in this thread or god knows...another coaching thread. I think ARZ took their time and "settled" for Arians
I don't remember how their coaching search went down though.
Re: 2014 Current and Potential Coaches
I think it's more likely that it comes down to trying to make the best hire. I hear what you're saying: if you're 100% sold on a coach, hire him. However, what if you're just 95% sold? Maybe it's worth seeing if the next guy can sell you on the extra 5%. Maybe there's a candidate Spielman is particularly interested in and he wants to meet with him before he makes a final decision. The idea that he's just covering his a## is pretty ridiculous. The best way for him to do that is to make the best hire possible, not to needlessly prolong the process.radar55 wrote:The issue of time has NOTHING to do with the process of hiring the next head coach....the issue is whether or not Spielman can properly IDENTIFY the correct type of coach to lead this team. It sounds like this is about Zimmer for you since you expressed your concern that the "FO is going to take their sweet time and we will be left with whatever is left" but "whatever is left" might include someone better than Zimmer.

They interviewed Horton (in house) and I think they were heavily targeting Andy Reid b/c of the Kevin Kolb connection. KC never let Reid leave the building.PacificNorseWest wrote: Arians is a damn good football coach though. I'm sure they were happy to get him.

Yes but as we are narrowing our search those candidates are also interviewing with other teams, so Zimmer could be on our list today and do an interview and get hired by the Titans tomarrow.dead_poet wrote: So we want Spielman/Wilfs to take more time than they did with Childress/Frazier.
