I'm shocked the Vikings are talking to Bevell, I mean he was Musgrave 1.0. Unimaginative play calling, run-run-pass-punt. I bet I can go back to some old Bevell quotes and post them here and no one would be able to tell if the person is talking about Musgrave or Bevell.
He's done well in Seattle so maybe it was a case of being handcuffed by Chili but the risk is too high IMO, lets get some new blood in here.

I'm hoping Spielman is talking to him as part of his extensive search. Basically reaching out to multiple contacts just to build a network as was suggested in a recent article.
Well, it's also one of those things, where if you purposely interview someone you know isn't qualified or good, you have an idea of how an under qualified / overwhelmed candidate will respond. It's actually fairly brilliant, when you hear something bad, it helps you realize when you hear something way better.

If Bevell comes in and says his things, then candidate #2 comes in and it sounds similar to Bevell, but then candidate #3 comes in and it sounds way better than both of them but then candidate #4 sounds even better than #3, you can start to build a base around the sample size. Now you have an idea that #4 is a pretty high quality candidate, #3 isn't bad, but Bevell and #2 are the floor. Now to go further, let's say you didn't take the time to interview the weaker candidates Bevell and #2. You'd know 3 is okay, and 4 is a little better, but you don't really know where they stand in the grand scheme of things.

If you interview Childress and no one else, it's quite possible the next few guys you interview could have made him look like the joke he was!

I think you mean Rob Ryan, Rex's brother. Although I would actually prefer Rex to Rob, but neither is leaving their respective teams
Yeah, because if Rob is offered a head coaching job, he's going to say no, he'd rather be a coordinator.
Personally the top 3 candidates on my board would be all defensive guys.

1. Mike Zimmer, DC Cincinnati Bengals

2. Sean McDermott, DC Carolina Panthers

3. Dan Quinn, DC Seattle Seahawks
Who are all "flavor of the month" guys who've had success as recently as possible. Wow Eagles had success hire their OC!

Rick Spielman did two segments with Paul Allen today on KFAN. I thought it was one of his better efforts, with some good talk about the coaching search. He also made some interesting comments about how he searches for a QB. First and foremost he stated that he believes he needs to work with the HC, the OC, the QB coach to find the right QB to "fit the system." Second he stated that they do their "due diligence" and go outside the building to talk to QB experts about who to pick up. I wonder just who those QB experts might be. All and all, much more interesting than typical Spielman-speak IMHO.

to find the right QB to "fit the system."
Great, another "west coast" guy huh Spielman?
You ####, find a good QB and they can play in the system. Or adjust the system to the QB. Just find a good QB and let it all work out. No more ridiculousness than "coaching up" a Quarterback. You have guys stepping in day one and delivering. They weren't "coached". They just had it. Russell Wilson wasn't "developed" as a later pick. Jay Gruden didn't mold Andy Dalton. Come on now, can we put this to rest yet. :steamed:

"I don't think our team is that far away". "Not that big of a rebuild". And his talk about how great of a job this is? :wallbang:

Hopefully just GM speak, no way he can believe half of what he says...

I don't think Zimmer fits that description. He's been a successful defensive coordinator in the NFL for quite a while.

Not really sure, I just haven't looked into him much. But from what I've heard, it's actually some what similar to Frazier, as in the players were insanely surprised to see him let go and they thought he was doing well for his first year there. Obviously some growing pains as a first year coach but nothing "deal breaking" as far as I know. Like I said though, I don't know if it IS like Frazier and he's actually bad, the players just like him, or if it's a legit complaint that they let a good coach go.

Here's the thing... does success as an OC or DC predict success as a HC? Or is there a set of skills that separates successful coordinators from successful head coaches? My idea is that it takes the ability to prioritize, delegate, and provide a clear vision that is communicated clearly from the top of the organization to the bottom. You have to be able to set a tone - a culture - and maintain it. That takes a force of personality, whether it be the quiet strength of a Tony Dungy or the simple brilliant success of a Bill Belicheck or the histrionics of a Pete Carroll. The other important attribute is a willingness to surround yourself with good coaches who might be smarter than you and who might challenge you.

So, while a number of the guys mentioned have success, I question if they have the skills to lead a team. That's the concern that has to be addressed by Spielman, and I hope he knows what is needed.

I'd like to see Del Rio hired for head coach and let him hire his own crew.

Have the Vikings ever hired a college coach for the HC position? Seems as though Seatle, Philly and the 49ers are doing ok.

didn't say the Vikings did. I see many college coaches not last long in the nfl. some do but most have failed.

most coaches in the playoffs were former nfl assistants or had some nfl experience at one time.
