In this case, that argument is no good. Gay made a very nice tackle on Jennings a yard short of the 1st down.

Especially when you have a kicker who has NEVER missed from 50+. You can take a sack, lose 10 or 15 yards and still EASILY be in his range.

It prevents the offense from purposely fumbling the ball forward to get lucky and have one of their teammates recover it. Think about it - if it's 4th down and you are getting tackled short of the 1st down, you wouldn't have anything to lose by fumbling the ball forward.

Me too. Picking that up and avoiding a turnover inside our own territory? I'll take it.

Matt Cassel Says;

"I don't always fumble, but when I do, I fumble for a first down."

I think you have to keep in mind that many of those passes require the QB to anticipate which route the receiver is opting for. It requires getting to know them and timing. Things that take a little time to sync up on. I wouldn't be surprised if some of cassels seemingly misses are just syncing issues that will get worked out.

He hit Jennings perfect with velocity which allowed him to run for the TD, where as Ponder almost always makes guys reach at odd angles. Maybe I'm just so sick of Ponder, but I really feel like Cassel looks like a grown man compared to Ponders sheepish play, stepping up, firing the ball. Sure it's easy to be accurate when you throw 5 yard passes only. I'm liking what I'm seeing so far.

The Lions are a lot better than people think they are now. Their defensive front is dangerous, if not one of the best.

Yeah good point, need to work Rudolph and maybe wright into the mix (who had a great block on the Jennings TD). So far Patterson hasn't done much other than show our corners how to defend a ball in the endzone.
