So, they weren't really trying for the TD after all........ :x. So, the coaches couldn't make up their mind with the pass on 2nd down and then reverted to clock running mode on 3rd. Fantastic

Chili-ball.
I'm beginning to wonder if what they like most about Ponder is his obedience.

Unreal. No check to a pass? That's insane and does nothing but hamstring the guy who at that point seemed to have a hot hand. It's that kind of inflexibility that sours me on Musgrave.

He sits and shakes hands on command!

I don't like hearing that either. I think every play should come with a check option in case the QB doesn't like what he's seeing from the defensive alignment.

Not to sidetrack the conversation, but neither of your points is true.

Statistically, some QBs have good stats and QBR in the 4th quarter compared to other parts of the game.

And Tony Romo has THE HIGHEST 4TH QUARTER QBR of any quarterback in the NFL since 2000. Higher than Brady, Manning(s), Rodgers, Brees or anyone else. He also has a higher passer rating in December and January than in earlier months...with a career overall rating of north of 95, that's saying something.

Romo gets a bad rap because of one botched snap against Seattle in the playoffs, and a few late interceptions while trying to lead comebacks for a team that has had no chance without him.

I'd take Tony Romo on this team in a heartbeat.

You wouldn't even have to finish your question before I said yes to bringing him here.

So would I. The point was more that things are different in crunch time than the middle of the 2nd quarter. Feel free to substitute "Farve" for "Romo" if you'd like. I didn't use Farve as I didn't really want to go down that road. Not saying it's all warranted. None of this really matters now, as it looks like it was a total "go conservative" call as I believed in the first place

Also, 4th Quarter QBR doesn't really work here. They could be up 20 or down 20 and their performance would still factor into that. Here's an article(2012) that actually shows the QBR when the score is within 8 in the 4th quarter. Romo isn't top 6. http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcnorth/post/_ ... situations

As much as I like Romo as a Cowboy, (I can't stand the Cowboys) I'd take him over Ponder as well.

But that's what you get when you hire bend but don't break. soft zone. keep everything in front and tackle well. Defense. And dink and dunk. West coast. Power running. Offense...not exactly bringing in guys who are outside the box thinkers or overly aggressive.
Couldn't have said it any better. Before the Vikings make any MAJOR moves towards being a team to be reckoned with Both the offensive and Defensive Philosophies HAVE TO CHANGE. We Play Wimp football, play not to lose girly football. Nothing will change around here until THIS changes

Agreed. I'm hoping Ponder was taking an underhand shot at Musgrave/Frazier.

I wish Ponder would just say f#^k it, and go for broke. Especially if he realizes he is not even trusted by his play callers.

Not that he had many options to check to on that play. There was only 1 WR on the field. And the run had no chance, 10 defenders were immediately in the box as they reacted to the hand-off. Had Rudolph pulled off his block and rolled right, a PA would have been wide open for a TD. And if you're going to run, why not spread out the defense? Damn running from these bunch formations is driving me nuts. But my beef is with Frazier. There was still 3:23 left on the clock at the time but our biggest concern was time and timeouts? WTF? Yeah that kind of clock management doesn't remind me of Childress at all. If I remember correctly, Chicago never even used their final time out.

Reusse has some choice words to say about the issue. Worth the read.

Reusse: Ponder found his rhythm in Chicago, then the rug was pulled
And after that third-down throw to Jennings, another third-down conversion for Ponder at the goal line — using his speed or his arm — could have caused legions of Vikings fans to say:

“Maybe we were wrong about this guy. Maybe he can turn into a reason that this team wins games in tough circumstances.”

Musgrave didn’t believe, and now Ponder must wait for that moment. He could go 20-for-22 with three touchdowns Sunday and it won’t matter, because it would be a victory over the Browns with Brian Hoyer starting at quarterback.

Bad decision, Purple brainiacs — not giving your quarterback the chance to lock up a road win in Chicago and gain big points back home.
