Christian Ponder played pretty well yesterday if you ask me. One of the mistakes he made that was not really his fault was the interception. He tried to throw the ball away but his arm was hit. The lions did a great job of stopping Peterson, and when defenses can stop Peterson we don't have the best chance to win the football game. Simpson played well and Jennings made a couple nice catches. Ponder can be a good quarterback if he has good receivers and he does. hopefully Ponder can deliver us a win next week against chicago

Re: Ponder looked fine
Ponder sucked. He has no pocket presence and played as if it were his first NFL start. He reminds me of David Carr. THEY CAN't read defenses. I hate to be this pessimistic.. I'm beginning to think he will be a bust. They keyed Peterson because they know Ponder wouldn't hurt them. The pass protection was poor as well. Looked like the Buffalo preseason game when they destroyed the OL. If Ponder doesn't show something in a couple of weeks.. Hello Matt. 42 yrs of these guys and my patience are at an all-time low. Guys like MOTHMAN deserve far better. Oh.. How I miss the old days. Bud Grant, Fran, Chuck, Mick, Ron, Alan, Carl, Paul.....I'll be 59 next month.. My days are numbered.

Re: Ponder looked fine
This franchise has settled for some of the worst quarterbacks in its history ever since Culpepper went down.
"X looked fine" is why this franchise hasn't won a Super Bowl. There are lots of quarterbacks in winning and losing efforts that did "fine"
last week and Ponder with 4 turnovers and Jennings and Simpson bailing him out with superhero catches was not one of those quarterbacks.
I don't know, Sam Bradford looked fine. Andy Dalton, Carson Palmer, Jay Cutler, Alex Smith, Josh Freeman, Ryan Tannehill looked fine.
Decent to good QBs, not elite by any stretch of the imagination, easily available to a team like the Vikings, they looked fine.
Ponder looked like crap.
Edit: And look at the last Super Bowl winners in the past 10 years. Who is "fine" in that? Brad Johnson and Joey Flacco?
I'd sacrifice goats and virgins under the light of the moon during a Black Mass if 2002 or 2003 Brad Johnson could replace Ponder.
I'm not asking for Brees, Brady, Manning, Rodgers, just 2002 or 2003 Brad Johnson.

Re: Ponder looked fine
I agree that Ponder wasn't the #### that many are making him to be. It wasn't his best game but the offense did put scores together. There were throws down the field. Less river dancing. In fact, I thought his footwork and calmness in the pocket looked better....but he didn't stay long enough in the pocket at times. Detroits line was far more disruptive than our own and the Lions short passing game to Bush and that other kid really opened up lots of options for Stafford as well as nuetralizing the Vikings attack on defense.themarksmann wrote:Christian Ponder played pretty well yesterday if you ask me. The D were on their heels most of the game.
Would like to see more of Patterson ASAP and get some of the new guys in at LB ASAP.
There Bears have the same potential with Cutler and Forte to exploit the middle of our D...maybe not to the same result, as Forte is not as quick or shifty as Bush, but when Defenses have to account for pass catching backs it helps loosen up the outside.
Winfield is sorely missed IMO.
I think Ponder will bounce back against the Bears just due to the belief that their D-line will be less difficult for us.

Re: Ponder looked fine
I say outside of the turnovers Ponder was DECENT. The defense gave up a lot of points and Ponder is not a QB who can win shootouts. Detroit has 16 passing first downs, 10 rushing first downs. We couldn't get many stops on defense and I think that was the biggest letdown. We force Ponder to make passes we know he is not going to make.
But after all that he did managed to connect with Jennings and accumulated a total of 140 receiving, his best game as a Viking so far. Ponder also connected with 6 other players for some passes. Im not saying Ponder had a good game but I wouldn't say he is the sole reason why we lost. It's easy to look at 3 INTs and a fumble and say its all Ponder's fault.
If the D can play better next week we will be in good shape. Ponder is a game manager. He's at his best when he is moving the chains, making short throws, and running time of the clock. He's hasn't shown the ability to keep up with a high scoring offense. If the defense can limit the points, we will win. If any team scores over 30 like Detroit, then I don't like our chances.

Re: Ponder looked fine
Which one? There were three.themarksmann wrote:Christian Ponder played pretty well yesterday if you ask me. One of the mistakes he made that was not really his fault was the interception.
Oh, you mean the one where he panicked, took three steps to his left, closed his eyes, and heaved. You're right ... I do recall that. His arm was hit.themarksmann wrote:He tried to throw the ball away but his arm was hit.
Ah ... it was Adrian's fault. I hadn't thought of it that way, but yes, the 78-yard TD really set a poor tone for the rest of the game.themarksmann wrote:The lions did a great job of stopping Peterson, and when defenses can stop Peterson we don't have the best chance to win the football game.
So if Ponder can be a good quarterback if he has good receivers, and he has good receivers, then ... ? I'm so confused.themarksmann wrote:Simpson played well and Jennings made a couple nice catches. Ponder can be a good quarterback if he has good receivers and he does.
Now THERE'S something we can agree on!themarksmann wrote:hopefully Ponder can deliver us a win next week against chicago

Re: Ponder looked fine
Saying he waited too long to throw the ball away is the same as saying he blew it, especially on a play that is already broken. Saying that was not his fault is a real stretch for me. He could have easily gotten that ball out of bounds and lived to fight another play. The defender made a good play there, but that is on Ponder. He's a 3rd-year starter who should be able to see when nothing is there and what the correct response is to that situation.themarksmann wrote:Christian Ponder played pretty well yesterday if you ask me. Re: Ponder looked fine
he overthrew a 5 yard pass and chucked a ball up while being tackled and dont forget when he tossed the ball to Peterson while being tackled.
he sucks and hasnt improved much since last season.
