There's really no one out there who covers the Vikings like he does. Zulgad is now basically just a radio guy and Craig and Gosseling don't seem as plugged in/in depth as him.

One really doesn't have to look far to disprove that theory, though. In 2012, Matthew Stafford threw for nearly 5,000 yards and averaged more than 310 yards/game and the team went 4-12. Drew Brees threw for OVER 5,000 yards, had 43 TDs and completed over 63% of his passes. The Saints went 7-9.

Yeah ... but for some reason it's a line of thinking that has really taken root and not just with Vikings fans.

If the same kind of thing happened like in 2004 (The QB of the team has one of the best statistical seasons of any QB ever but the team goes 8-8) the season obviously won't have been 'all about Ponder' ... but he will have plenty of excuses for the team losing that don't involve his bad play
LOL! True... although in case you haven't heard, there are " no excuses".
VikingLord wrote:Two reasons this season is "all about Ponder":
- This is his 3rd year as a starter and he's expected (and needs) to make big strides if he's going to claim the starting QB spot going forward.
- QB play, for better or worse, has an out-sized influence on games. While Ponder is far from the only reason the Vikings might win or lose a given game, his play will be a big contributor, and for anyone who may doubt that, just look at that playoff game last year where Webb started compared to the last game of the season where Ponder started.
So "All" is a strong word and technically not valid, but at the same time, Ponder's development will be key to the season if the Vikes are going to be in contention for more than just individual accolades.
I understand what you're saying and Ponder's performance and continued development will be one of the keys to a successful season but since, as you wrote, "all' is a strong word and technically incorrect, it would sure be nice if people would simply misrepresenting the situation. We know it's not accurate to say "it's all on Ponder" in the first place and not only is it inaccurate, it disregards the importance of the other players on the team.

I am too. He did a great job over the past few years.

I think it's taken root because the media (particularly ESPN) constantly reinforces it. Heck, during the height of Favre mania I remember an announcer crediting Favre for inspiring a defensive player on his team to make a great play. It was the presence of a great QB that made it happen! Hilarious...
I'm pretty excited about the WR and DT battles pending in camp. I think Evans will push Guion for the starting NT job and who knows, maybe Floyd will end up pushing them both out of contention, even though he's currently slated to play UT. From what I've read, he may get some reps at the nose.
I'm really curious about who will start at split end too. Will Patterson be able to seize that job or will Simpson step up and take it. How will Webb actually look as a full-time WR? There should be some serious competition at WR.

That's interesting. I really believe that some individuals have the power to inspire others to greatness. Favre just happened to be a QB so it fit right into a media archetype. I think the Vikes now have several players who exhibit this quality; AD, Gerald, Jennings, Harrison and Greenway come to mind. Joe Webb too, after watching his helmet cam vid.
It certainly doesn't have to be the QB, and in the Vikes situation it helps that Ponder has these kinds of guys around him sharing that leadership role. The more he can just focus on doing his job regardless of anyone else's expectations of him the better.

Hard to hear any different until camp actually starts, but it souns if though the staff wants Webb to get the #6 WR spot. Am I wrong?
A successful coach needs a patient wife, loyal dog, and great quarterback - and not necessarily in that order.
Mothman wrote:I think Summers has a shot to win that job but we'll see... maybe I'm overestimating him. Webb has the advantage of being a well-liked veteran.
Meh. Rodney Smith.
I wonder if the Vikings could carry six wide receivers on the active roster this year. They seem to have some very real raw talent coming into camp at WR. On the other hand, if they want to stash Summers or Smith on the PS, they'd probably both clear waivers.
