So your saying Locke is a sure fire wasted pick then?

I'm not, but if he doesn't win a battle in training camp, the team isn't keeping two punters. If you draft a wide receiver or lineman, you can keep that guy if you like him but he doesn't win a starting spot. The danger of throwing a pick higher than the 7th round away on a punter is just that.

Wouldn't mind seeing a CB here. We don't really need Sherels anymore with Patterson's ability to return punts. O-line desperately needs help as well and I would also take a flier on a QB, maybe someone like Dysert.

Would love to see them take Poyer.

Ok well I guess I'll just end the argument by saying I don't think there's a chance he does not make the team. If you disagree then I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree

I'd also like to see them take Alvin Bailey from Arkansas.

I like this idea.

I still really want Da'Rick Rogers because he has 1st round talent, but it appears at this point it's looking less and less likely that will happen.

Don't take it the wrong way, I've argued the merits of drafting a punter before, but it was after Mitch Berger left. And it was for a punter that had been projected to be a 3rd round value in the 7th round.

Yeah that would be a great pick. I'm rooting for Mike Edwards too, corner out of Hawaii, but he will probably be available in the 7th or UDFA.

No, the reason you can't get value, is because most if not all of the value is gone. The positions you can get value at this late is kicker and punter....

If 80%+ of the time you stepped on a crack your mom hurt her back, would you still just step on it because, well, maybe you can get value here at some other position?

Every year people get worked up about late round picks. And every year a few players actually contribute that are taken in those late rounds.

You take a specialist because you really need one badly.

If you can grab a guy who dropped down to the fifth, then you do that, even if it's just for depth. You can keep 6-8 linemen, 5-6 receivers, several linebackers, 3 running backs, a mess of defensive backs, etc. You can only keep one punter unless you feel that it's a good idea to stow one on special teams. If you're going to stow a guy on special teams, then you better have a punter that is seriously past his prime. Like 37 or 38 and can't get the ball 45 yards anymore. These guys don't HAVE to immediately contribute. They're depth that competes with possibly inferior depth. This becomes vital later in the season when things like the playoffs start.

There is obviously still value in this draft that has fallen that would have pushed some of the current Vikings backups. Having a good backup makes contract negotiations a lot more straightforward. Punters don't even score points or stop the other team from scoring points. The purpose of a punter is a pure team purpose, it's about field position.

You're looking at it entirely the wrong way. You're so obsessed with taking the best or almost the best player at a position without assessing the value of the position itself.

A fast coverage LB and a good Punter that would have been gone a few picks later. So far so good Spielman.
