Conference call with Matt Cassel right now. Set up trip shortly after cut, spent time with Musgrave, Frazier, Spielman today. "Perfect fit."
Cassel says #Vikings told him Ponder's their starting quarterback, wanted "somebody who can step in if need be."
Cassel: "I felt at home and I felt it was the right place for me." #Vikings
Cassel says he threw with Ponder some last offseason. They've already talked. Going to have fun this year.

Well I'm glad he's accepted the back up role "graciously." I don't like the guy's play very much but he should give us a better shot than Webb if the need arises.

Report: Cassel give Jennings hug.
Cassel said he did see Jennings, gave him a big hug and told him to come to MN to be a Viking.
Did Cassel's hug work on Jennings? "I don't know. We'll find out."

Hopefully it works!

The Minnesota Vikings were clear about the role they expect to be filled by Matt Cassel, who said in a conference call on Friday he has no illusions about an open competition for the starting quarterback job with Christian Ponder.

"They conveyed exactly that," Cassel said, shortly after signing the deal he agreed to on Thursday, "that Christian obviously had a great year last year, they went 10-6 and that he's their starting quarterback and that they're looking to bring somebody in with experience and somebody that will come in and basically be somebody who can step in if need be.

"The fact of the matter is, again, Christian's the starting quarterback and I think that we'll have a great room. I'm there to add value. I'm there to help him out in whatever capacity that is and go from there."
That settles that.

I'm surprised it is only a one year deal then. Don't you usually sign a back up for longer?

Yeah, he can't throw over 15 yards downfield either so he should fit this offense perfectly!
that Christian obviously had a great year last year
Great year in terms of Christian Ponder / Matt Cassel I assume. "Great year"

He'll be starting by week 10. Book it, Danno.

If Cassel is your starting QB at anytime this season.... the season is over.

I disagree, Bowe did exceptionally well with Cassel throwing to him. I think you have it backwards.

Precisely, put up Pro Bowl quality numbers with a jittery starter throwing to him. As for the O-Line, that's inaccurate. Perhaps in game situations they appeared shakier but stats never lie, a top 10 unit's impressive whatever way you look at it, should have been good enough for Cassell to get the job done.
