Re: Winfield released
Sean smith paired with Chris Cook I think would make for a pretty good group of starting corners

Re: Winfield released
Paul Allen thinks Nmandi would be huge in our defense. His take was that Nmandi can't play one on one, but would be awesome in zone.
Not sure on how true that is, but that was his take yesterday.

Sad to see Winfield go as he's one of my all time favourite players but I have to concede it's the right move financially.

Yes! Trade for Revis. Sign Wallace.dead_poet wrote: Tom Pelissero on Twitter

R-R-R-Revis...?
Revis gets one year to prove his knee/worth. But having him the primary shut down corner with Cook getting #2 duty would be HUGE upgrade. And when resigned, Vikes are still NOT overpaying at CB position overall, even with Revis (salary of Revis+Cook+Robinson+Filler).
Wallace although a high price risk, does come with some insurance...he might not catch 100 balls (no Vikes receiver will with AP and this offense) but at minimum he can run go-routes and his deep threat ability would force teams to not play 8-9 in the box. Nice to have this for AP and his remaining prime years. And Wallace as #1, Simpson #2 and high draft pick Rookie slot with Kyle at TE...actually really good weapons for Vikes.

I am really really sad. And even more PO'ed. If things go the way I think, I hope Spielaman get canned and gets another job in our division. Hopefully GB. God today sucks. Lets let everyone good go, but lets resign retards like Carlson...

Leaving the door open for Winfield to return.mrc44 wrote:Could they possibly re sign Winfield for less? I just find it weird this happened. He obviously wouldn't take the pay cut they asked him to. His reps were going to be limited anyway, so it makes sense I guess. Just glad to hear we locked down loadholt, although I would have preferred solidifying the left side by grabbing levitre.
Levitre is gone to Tennessee.

Re: Winfield released
Winfield will be talking with 31 other teams. I have a gut feeling that if he can't find another home, he'll retire rather than come back and play for the Vikings at a reduced salary.dead_poet wrote:Leaving the door open for Winfield to return.

Re: Winfield released
I understand the argument that he would only give us 1-2 more good years and Spielman is building for the long term. But unless he was taking cap space from a younger guy that they wanted to keep, it makes no sense to me....
Yes, if this was a cap move to lock up Loadholt (which I am glad they did) then I would understand. But they didn't NEED the cap space! What was the difficult choice they were making here??
He was still good, they don't need the extra cap space, and he would be a great mentor to the younger guys, and help transition to a new corner.
Just because you're "rebuilding" doesn't mean you don't try to put the most competitive team on the field every week....so long as competing doesn't put you in cap hell and hurt your ability to rebuild long term. I don't see the huge advantage to this move. Maybe there is a big splash about to be made on a younger player, but at this point, I hate this move.

Re: Winfield released
I'm really sad to see Winfield go, but a 36 year-old slot corner doesn't merit that kind of money.
It's the right move, but it still sucks.

Deangelo Hall would be a nice pick up. He is younger than Winfield by 6-7 seasons...

He was a great player and it was awesome having him on our team. However, he was getting old and it was probably the right move. Sad to see him go

Re: Winfield released
Overreaction Tuesday. He was my favorite too, but last year was probably the best year he had left and with what they were going to pay him this upcoming year then it's probably the best they release him. He may do well elsewhere, but his career is almost done.
