Predictions: major offseason acquisitions

Post by Texas Vike »

I would like to hear some debate about likely acquisitions for the Vikings in the upcoming Free Agency period and the 2013 draft. I am less interested in each poster's dream scenario than in his/her "I think this is realistically what Spielman and co. will do".

Here's my take:

1. We make one major FA pickup, possibly 2. Knowing Spielman's tendency to avoid overpaying for flashy "favorites" in FA, I think it's unlikely that we'll pick up Mike Wallace, for example, or even Andy Levitre. I see a CB or S as a much more likely scenario. Since it is a deep pool of secondary FAs, I think we'll go after one of the following to get good value: a) Dashon Goldson (S, SF) b) William Moore (S, ATL) c) Sean Smith (CB, MIA) d) Chris Houston (CB, DET) e) Keenan Lewis (CB, PIT) f) Brent Grimes (CB, ATL) g) Glover Quin (S, HOU).

2. DRAFT: I think we'll snag at least one WR in the first three rounds. I think they'll target a fast, tall, legitimate #1 WR. My hope is Keenan Allen in rd. 1. If he's off the board I can see them going OL, DL, LB in rd. 1 and taking someone like Justin Hunter or Terrance Williams in rd. 2.

If they get Allen in rd. 1 I can imagine them moving up within round 2 to snag Arthur Brown, LB (Kansas St).

Round 3--I think they'll surprise some by taking a QB around rd. 3 or 4.

That's all the predictions I have... What's your take?

If you read the board's poster's takes on all of the already existing topics, things might not be so redundant; PFF free agency drafter, 2013 free agency tracker, 2013 draft, First round. But then again we could all keep repeating ourselves, it is a long off-season :smilevike:

I have read nearly all the threads, thanks. And it's precisely BECAUSE the off-season is long that I'm looking for some intelligent discourse on realistic moves to acquire difference makers. If you are admin and find this thread redundant feel free to cut it.

I encourage the discussion but have little to add. I'm on the road and not nearly up to snuff on the draft class.

However, I would not be surprised if they make a play at Wallace due to his age and actual ability. I'm not convinced that Minny is a situation he'd be attracted to though. Young QB, the stadium....could be deterrents IMO. He's going to have lots of options.

I hope they draft another QB. Not because I don't support Ponder but because we need some quality depth there for sure. If not this year then next year for sure...Derek Carr will be coming out of Fresno. I'm predicting that he will be a good pro.

I say they will spend the bulk of their picks on defense and, depending on what they fanagle in FA, grab either a wideout or OLman with one of the higher picks.

Major acquisitions? None.

The draft doesn't count.

That sounds as reasonable as any take I've heard. I think they'll spend a fair amount to keep Loadholt and in that sense, he'll be their big free agent acquisition. I suspect they'll find a way to re-sign Felton too. I don't think they'll get in a bidding war for top free agents like Wallace or Levitre but I do predict they'll be more active in free agency than some people expect. They almost have no choice because quite a few of their players will be unrestricted free agents and they either need to re-sign those players or find replacements.

If they make a high profile signing in free agency that doesn't involve one of their own players, I'm thinking it will be for a DB or an LB.

I expect them to target WR, DT and LB in the first 3 rounds, though I'm not sure in what order. Free agency will have an impact on that, of course.

Sorry I'm not exactly going out on a limb there. :)
