"It’s unclear if it’s raw speculation or has some teeth to it, but the Vikings are being mentioned as a potential landing spot for QB Matt Cassel after his expected release."
Probably can be had for pretty cheap. People forget that he spent time behind Tom Brady, too. As far as veteran presence with significant playing experience, I think he's got the edge over Rosenfels despite how lousy those KC teams were.
I'm kind of hoping someone takes Joe Webb and gives him one last shot at being a wide receiver. Maybe he had bad hands, which was why the Vikings repeatedly scoffed at that idea? He could probably play some 3rd down back too. Maybe even a defensive back. There's got to be something that the guy is good at, with his level of athleticism.

Going against the Vikings forum grain, I'm fairly confident, I'd take Cassell. I'd take almost anyone over Ponder, but that's not meant to be a shot at MCassell!

Re: Matt Cassell for backup?
I absolutely would not mind him to be the backup for the Vikings. He's not a starting caliber QB in the NFL, but he, like TJack, is probably one of the best backup options you could ask for. He's got enough skill and talent to help a team win/hold a lead if the team is put in a tight spot.
He can be had for relatively cheap too! Go get him...

Re: Matt Cassell for backup?
I wouldn't take Blaine Gabbert or Joe Webb over Ponder, for sure. I can name a bunch of quarterbacks around the league that I wouldn't take over Ponder. Those are the guys that most people forget about because they're terrible. I'd be uncomfortable trading for Tebow OR Sanchez at this point over Ponder. I probably wouldn't think Derek Anderson over Ponder. There's probably about 15 quarterbacks in the league that I'd definitely take over Christian Ponder, and probably about 10 more that I'd consider would be positive competition. Good quarterbacks are a real premium...that's why the Ravens just threw INSANE money at Joe Flacco (whom I don't even put in my top 5 in the league).indianation65 wrote:Going against the Vikings forum grain, I'm fairly confident, I'd take Cassell. I want to give Ponder one more shot, preferably with some better receivers. If they draft a guy who "should" make a difference and sign a guy who "should" make a difference, and Ponder can't move the chains with his arm, then I'd be more in favor of drafting a quarterback. Next year's draft should be better, anyway. I still stick with my comparison between Christian Ponder and Rich Gannon...it took Gannon a few years to get his legs under him, but when he retired, people suddenly realized he was a pretty decent quarterback all along even though no one thought he was anything more than a 3rd stringer for his first 4-5 years in the league.
(You can't sign a decently productive free agent starting quarterback any more without a bunch of strings attached without blowing up your salary cap. So I don't ever discuss signing anything more than a FA backup. A trade is the only thing I can see that could net the Vikings a decent potential starter.)
