Dashon Goldson?

Post by ViciousBritishVike »

Perhaps a bit of a pipe dream but with the news leaking out that the '9ers are unlikely to tag Goldson, is anyone in approval of going after him? Pairing both he and Harrison together would create a formidable young partnership at the Safety position for many seasons to come and I would prefer this, as apposed to chasing after someone like Charles Woodson, who could possibly hang it up after just an additional season.

Although the experience would be a huge asset, I would agree investing some serious money in prying away a key player, who will be a factor for the long haul.

A hard hitting safety to go along with Harrison's playmaking ability? I'm down. The only question is going to be at what cost? I'm all for stacking the defense though.

Take away a safeties ability to lower the boom and that's what happens. They have to play a different way now. John Lynch would be average in today's NFL by those standards. There really are only a few playmaking safeties out there who can make an impact other than big hits.

The Lynch example may be a reach, but it's to prove a point.

Goldson is pretty good IMO. Guy hits HARD and his closing speed is awesome.

Wonder what commercials are coming up this season?

Glad it wasn't a completely ludicrous thought but yeah, admittedly the Vikes are usually pretty safe in terms of shelling out big bucks, which I for one admire. However, providing injury doesn't intervene, the guy seems to be a perennial Pro Bowler and at least his ability at this level is a certainty, unlike those yet drafted.

Another great point, keep him from joining rivals, I don't envy the other NFC West teams having to face him twice per season. Impact player. When it comes to range and flowing to the football, I thought Jamarca took a giant step last season and long may that continue but Goldson's in a class of his own.

Instead of starting up a new topic, Dashon Goldson, there is already an existing Topic that details Free agents. Instead of starting a new one up for every FA that might come available. Perhaps, if they want to, one of the mods could move this to that topic keeping things more in "order".

Apologies, I'll bare that in mind next time, still adapting to this whole forum concept. I guess the excitement got the better of me.

Either way, as we're all on the same wavelength, hopefully the Vikes take note and push to make it happen! Oh what it is to dream, right?

Stranger things have happened, it certainly makes a lot of sense in a variety of ways.

Hey no problem fellow fan. In fact I might be wrong about this topic thing but it seems to me anyway that it is easier to follow when FA stuff is kept in one topic rather than several individual ones. :smilevike:

I wonder, with all of these rules changes, if hard hitting safeties (like John lynch mentioned by the previous poster) will be used less and less in conventional Defenses.

I mean, if you can't hit a guy anyway, why not just put 2 more speedy cover guys out there? Four or 5 corners would be harder to pass against than 2 or 3 corners and 2 slower but bigger safeties who aren't allowed to use their size anyway.

Just a thought.

Thanks for your understanding and I agree, it's more convenient to have everything that relates to one particular topic in a singular, 'easy to find' place.

Or maybe it's actually harder to find a conversation about a particular FA you're interested in because you have to wade through 400 FAs you don't care about.

OK, I know that goes against the forum grain. But it's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it.

I think the challenge with S in the NFL right now is that they have to be able to single cover a WR against a 4 WR set. Perhaps more importantly, they also need ot be able to play coverage against the new age NFL TE. They also have to be sure tacklers and be able to support in the run game. In a lot of ways they are asking these guys to be like a MLB but with A LOT more ground to cover and bigger consequences if they screw up. (no one behind them) If they are out of position the error is magnified due to the distance.

In that respect the abiltiy of a guy to deliver a shot is more of a "nice to have" than a necessity. It is more important for the guy to be in position and be able to cover, plus be a sure tackler.

I think a huge issue is that in College the guys playing this position are not asked to do these things at nearly the same level, the run support aspect is emphasize to a much greater degree. The article written about how the Vikes are looking for a diferrent type of player at this position implied that maybe they are looking at different types of prospects than the traditional college safety.

Could you imagine that being Cobb as the intended WR here?
