Long time Viking fan here, (since the 60's) first time poster:

For what it's worth, I like Ponder, and believe he has what it takes to be successful. He has shown that he has the arm, the feet, the accuracy, and the cerebral capacity to excel. What he has not shown is the balance of emotions and psychology, yet, to be consistent. There's also the matter of an offensive line that at times looks very good, but too frequently, leaks like a sieve. No one should expect much more from Ponder, Webb, or any other QB for that matter, if they're not given adequate protection for a reasonable amount of time. Great run blockers they are, but only average in pass protection.
Finally, the wideouts are terrible, and therin lies the biggest problem. It's been years since we had someone with world class speed, AND the ability to make the dramatic catch. We've lowered our standards at that position to the level of the 70's Bears, and that won't cut it.
Summarily, I believe we need to part ways with Percy Harvin. As good as he is, (and he's phenominal), his trade value, coupled with a draft pick or two, might position us to nab a top flight wide out in next year's draft. It's highly unlikely that we're going to convince someone to trade to us, their #1 WR, and there's nothing that will be on the open market that would be an improvment over Harvin, so it almost has to be through the draft. Harvin has wowed us, but as my friend used to say, "there's no such thing as the last great deal", and I believe it. With Harvin as bait, we might shore up multiple positions, (we need it), strengthening our entire team, and not just the slot/kick returner position.

i agree, its gotta be bowe for us. with harvin we have a quick, strong slot receiver. wallace is just fast, dont get me wrong he is amazing, but speed is about it with him. bowe has decent speed, is big and physical. we need someone who can fight for balls in the air, like marshall, calvin johnson, vincent jackson etc. bowe has 4 1000+ yard seasons with terrible qbs and a revolving door for coaches and coordinators.

we lost out on jackson and garcon this year, instead we put money towards carlson, who is worthless, the money would have been much better going towards one of those two. the redskins are 1-5 without garcon, 5-1 with him. we need a deep threat WR.

I'd rather augment Harvin's talents with another receiver than trade them away. He's the most versatile offensive player in the game, and he's young. I don't know what you expect to get back to make the deal worth while. I just think it would be a mistake.

I would say they should very well be considering drafting one with the 1st or 2nd pick this year, then perhaps look at TE in FA. Jared Cook would be a nice addition if they could get him away from TEN, he's similar to rudolph in size, but maybe I'm just dreaming there. Musgrave's 2 TE set offense may be dead anyway or maybe we just need someone better than carleson to pull it off.
I'm kind of wondering about Musgrave's 2TE set as well. Certainly if the Vikings get a guy like Cook, they can probably do it. But is that better than getting a talent upgrade at WR and going with more 3WR sets?

It's hard to say. I think New England is a good example of how a 2 TE set with a guy like Harvin (welker) is pretty potent. Even so they still need a better WR for the outside anyway so they would need to spend a 1st or 2nd rounder on one. Ideally there are times when you'd probably want to be able to run both! Either way, need better receivers regardless.

I completely agree that there has to be upgrading among the Vikings WRs no matter what.

New England does run a 2TE set really well, plus they do some great shotgun sets (and some of them are with 2 TEs). Of course, they also have that Brady guy!

Sign Vick. Draft a WR Rd 1, guards Rd 2 and Rd 3.

If this team will not move up for a quarterback in the draft. Which they wont, these guys think it's worse to spend another high pick on one, than sticking with one that is pathetic. And remember, Ponder wasn't a winner in college either.

I would call Buffalo about Ryan Fitzpatrick, and see if a 3rd would work. I would also call Dallas, see if they are all in with Romo. Id even look at Flynn in Seattle, or Kolb in Arizona. Id leave no stone unturned. They wont develop Webb, who could grow into the spot, but he hasn't been given a season to learn to attack a defense. Ponder is inexcusable, not even backup quality. Arm too weak, footwork is horendous, decision making brutal. This has to be addressed, give up on a 2nd year guy, absolutely!

While I think Romo is staying put in Dallas, his backup (Kyle Orton) could be an interesting option.

I'd rather use that 3rd on someone like Ryan Nassib or EJ Manuel and hope we get lucky like SEA did with Wilson than trade that pick for known mediocrity.
I never said give a 3rd for Kolb, I said a 3rd for Fitzpatrick. Didn't speculate a price, for the others. Kolb is a 5th maybe, if AZ drafts Barkley. And Kolb isn't great, he's average, that would have been enough vs Green Bay.

Exactly. And sign someone, anyone, who's available in free agency. No use wasting picks on these guys who've shown they're average...for non-injury reasons. No reason to give up picks for a stop-gap. Bad enough we have to resort to a stop-gap again because of these clowns.
