Purple bruise wrote:Right bring in a raw rookie with zero NFL experience and hand him the starting job before camp even starts WOW. Now that is the way to run a team and for sure the veterans would agree to just give him the job with out proving himself. Or wait a minute bring him in, let him "prove" himself to the coaches and the team hmmmm

Oh hi Matt Kalil. Yes, Purple bruise is right here. Did you want to tell him something? No, he probably gets it now? Oh ok, well have a nice season.

It happens all the time. Because teams have huge gaping holes at some positions (like the Vikings did at safety) and draft talented players early in the draft. (Like Harrison Smith). And in a lot of cases coaches aren't bullheaded (or incompetent) enough to start less talented players because "they're veterans". Whether it's heading into the offseason workouts, or throughout the season. Those younger players need all the snaps they can get with the first team to start working with the players around him. But I guess maybe our defense is too complicated for him to pickup enough to earn the starting job until the 2nd week of the preseason at the earliest.

So until Spielman gets control over the depth chart and not just the roster, I guess we'll have to keep tolerating this "in house" garbage you see all the time.
You want the GM to control the depth chart? Now that's a recipe for disaster.

WAY too much has been made of this Smith non-story. Whether he plays with the first team or the second team in the early days of training camp, he's still learning the defense. He's obviously turning heads and playing well so the lack of reps with the first team over the past couple of weeks don't seem to be hurting his development. He's well on his way to seizing the starting job and there's little doubt he'll have it. What's the point of all this angst? Emotional catharsis?

You also have to consider earning the respect of your fellow teammates. Kalil was #4 (really #3) overall, and also the guy he replaced is still a starter. Smith is basically taking someone's job, I don't really see a problem with putting him out there with the two's and making him show the guys that he belongs as a starter. And like I said, I have a feeling they're trying to figure out who to start opposite of Smith more than anything. I don't see this as a similar situation as AD's rookie year with Chester Taylor.

It's fairly common to start a guy down on the charts even though it's obvious he's going to be the guy. Look at Tannehill, top 10 pick, listed as 3rd on the depth chart before Gerrard was injured. Anyone honestly think Tannehill is going to sit behind Moore and Gerrard? Of course not, it's just a process.

No, just a comment on how coaches think. And how it affects teams in the long run.

A terrible team that's going no where for the next 3+ years making more stupid decisions? I know they can do no wrong in your eyes, so I understand why you're struggling to understand where the angst is coming from...

LOL! Oh yeah, that's the problem...

It must be handy to see 3+ years into the future. Please do us a favor and use that crystal ball to help us out with the Vegas odds on the next 3 Super Bowls! :)

Looks like the Everson Experiment is officially o-v-e-r.

@StribDW: Frazier also said Harrison Smith will start at safety Friday vs. Buffalo. Unless he really messes up, expect that to stick for duration.

Frazier said he feels comfortable with the depth the Vikings currently have at weakside linebacker with starter Erin Henderson and back-up Marvin Mitchell providing decent depth.
Still looks like a big question mark at starter and NO depth to me. Especially after their defensive end with no linebacking experience failed to crack the lineup in their 43 cover 2 base defense.

And it doesn't take a crystal ball to see this team won't be competing for anything other than 3rd place in the division for at least 3 years...especially with the clowns running it from ownership on down.

And look, Smith will start this week! I'm sure he just proved he could handle it last week and it wasn't some stubbornheadedness from Coach Clueless Part 2.

I remember Pat Brown looking pretty bad last year too. Who does that leave, Love? I'm assuming if Kalil or Loadholt went down then Johnson would slide out and someone like Berger or Schwartz would play guard.

They also have Levi Horn on the depth chart.

Pat Brown didn't look a whole lot better in the game the other day.

Other than Brown, DeMarcus Love is the only legitimate backup at tackle. Right now he's just coming back after his pectoral injury, but without contact yet, so he still looks to be a few weeks away. I understand they've also had Chris DeGeare practicing at left tackle. I have a feeling that Charlie Johnson would be the first choice at left tackle, Pat Brown at right tackle.

No we aren't! Don't be so negative. Once this front office/coaching staff fails. Zygi is going to have no choice but to bring in a GM with some actual credentials who he puts in charge of building the team from coaches down. No more ignoramus owner hand picking clueless coaches and putting guys with a track record of *not* finding talent in charge of finding talent.

Patience, it will get better. Just not any time soon. And not with the coaches and quarterbacks on the current roster.
