Vote Of Confidence

Post by PurpleMustReign »

So the Browns owner has said he will retain Mangini even though the Browns are one of the worst teams that have ever played.
I believe the same thing happened to Rob Zorn in Washington.
I'm guessing KC and some other teams have had similar goings-on as well.

None of those teams have played any better. And I'm sure none of them will any time soon. My question is.. don't you think the owner should say, "You better play better in the next 3 weeks or you're fired." and say it publicly? I would think it would do more good than to say that the coach will be retained no matter what happens. When was the last time a vote of confidence worked and made the team better?? Has it ever happened?
The Devil whispered in the Viking's ear, "There's a storm coming." The Viking replied, "I am the storm." ‪#‎SKOL2018

The problem is that football isn't like other sports where a coaching change midseason ever makes a difference. A coaching change is only useful if you have an assistant in the waiting (like Singletary last year) who you want to give a tryout to. Bringing in an outsider won't work. The season is lost anyway, so you may as well stick with the guy you have instead of paying someone else to come in and still paying the first guy.

Yeah, it won't make a difference in the wins and losses, playoffs, etc. But I do think it could help when it comes to personnel. Bringing in the new regime mid season will allow them to get a better look at what they have, and who they plan on retaining. I'm sure it'd be a lot easier to judge where guys fit when you're able to use them a little closer to how you would. Or wouldn't. As well as retaining certain players, preparing for the draft etc.

What good does it do keeping the guy? Other than financially everyone knows he's gone, the season is lost, there's less reason to retain them then there is to replace them.

Browns screwed that up big time, not only flushing this year down the toilet, but the Mangina did a great job of trading away picks and talent and getting NOTHING in return.

Problem there is you're limited to guys not currently coaching (ie, can't go after anyone else's coordinators). While there are a lot of big names available right now as opposed to other years, you're going to have to back up the truck to get one of those names to jump now and not wait to see what other jobs will be available at the end of the season (and keep their cushy TV jobs in the interim).
