Foot fractures

Post by Vikefantam »

Hi, all. It's been an eventful offseason here. I let a urinary tract infection go for a week before getting treatment and ended up septic (blood poisoning) with kidney and bladder stones. The sepsis ended up causing loads of other problems and things got worse when 2 moronic nurses inserted a contaminated IV in my left hand - I'm just getting over round 2 of sepsis here with a vein that is still rock hard - ew!. I've had 5 courses of antibiotics and 2 courses of steroids (why anyone would choose to take those is beyond me - they make me feel like I've had about 70 pots of coffee).

Anyway, after 2 1/2 months of being sick, I'm carrying laundry down the basement steps. I miscounted the steps and landed hard on the outside of my right foot, turning it totally underneath me. It was weird but my brain generated 8 cracks. Why that number, I don't know. Pretty much all my joints crack so I didn't think too much of it. Generally, I'm one to curse and move on when I get hurt but I just lay there and howled for about 5 minutes. I was home alone so I dragged myself back upstairs. And, as is typical for me, I waited a few days before going to see a foot doc (who was incredulous that I didn't go to the ER). I have an inversion fracture of the navicular bone. I read that quite often this requires surgery so I'm worried. Does anyone have any experience with foot fractures they can share?

Thanks!

My ex-wife's friend was hit by a drunk driver and the car smashed her feet. She has had many surgeries and casts and her feet are not any better. She can't walk, can't drive, and it gets infected every couple of months.

edit: They will probably end up amputating one of the feet for sure, possibly the other one as well, although the "good" one is doing much better from what I'm told.

So yeah, it could be a mess if you have a not-so-good surgeon. I would say do some research if you are going to have surgery.

Wow. Sorry to hear about ex-wife's friend. Kinda makes my navicular bone fracture seem minor. That guy will see some jail time but will get out. And I'm sure he'll walk out too. Like the cop who issued my concealed carry license said to me "The punishment never seems to suit the crime."

OMG, Tammy! I feel for you. But you have got to start getting medical attention a little sooner!

Good luck with the healing. And I agree with that you should get recommendations about your surgeon should you need surgery. It doesn't hurt to get second opinions, ya know!

Thanks, Dawn. What's sad is I have undergone medical assistant training and work in the health care field and know better. I'm in a rough place about my PCP now. Having let the UTI go for 7-10 days before going to see him, I was septic and just so sick. I've been on 6 courses of 5 different antibiotics (Keflex twice). However, the third antibiotic caused a seizure. I don't usually have them but I have a lowered seizure threshold, so meds like that (Ultram, quinolones/fluoroquinolones) can cause a seizure . Simple fix, right? Don't take said medications but the doctor wasn't paying attention and the pharmacy didn't take notice. I looked up Cipro after the seizure and saw that it fell in the category of fluoroquinolones. Nobody paid attention, I was too sick and miserable to care. I hadn't had a seizure for 8 years, the original ones which were caused by Ultram. Problem is I really like my PCP. He has also hired a nurse practitioner and a physician's assistance.

I've been reading up on this fracture - my bone is only chipped but what happens in these types of fractures is the muscle separtes from the bone, taking longer to heal that a conventional fracture. I just wish the numbness would go away. It's been broken for 2 weeks now. I'm going to go see if I can get another Unna boot put on my foot. It's a medicated wrap that helps to take the swellling down. Feels so good when they put it on. My foot was purple for quite awhile and I joked with people who asked about the injury that I am a Vikings fan just getting an early start on the season. :D
