Nathan inks 4 year deal

Joe Nathan signed a four year contract for 47 million today. Good to see him locked in. Good contract length too as any more than that and they are paying heavily for an over the hill reliever.

Good to see the team is working to keep the cornerstones that are left after trading Johan.

We need relievers, not closers. What the heck is he going to close out?

I still think even $6 mill a year is ludicris for a closer. $10 mill per year is absurd. I Would rather have seen if we could trade him and put Neshek into the role.
But I am glad he is staying. He is one of the best closers now, and eventually could be one of the best ever.

I've suggested that many times, but he is one of the best closers in the game. It won't hurt to keep him around.

I wish teams would use closers more like Goose Gossage was used though. Use your ace reliever in the most important part of the game, which isn't necessarily the ninth. Sometimes its the 7th in a tied game with two guys on, for instance.

Its a lot of money, but at least it shows Pohlad is opening the purse strings a little bit. In today's market it isn't an outragious deal though; for instance Gil Meche last year signed a contract for 5 years and 55 million and he is only a good pitcher, nothing special.

Our salary is 15 million less than it was last year. Not sure how cutting salary shows an owner who is opening the purse strings.

It was this, or lose him as soon as his contract is up. The price of a top closer is only going to increase. I'm sure he could get 15 or more per year if he hit the open market.

not much use for a closer when your team isn't winning, and i don't expect the Twins to be leading in many games this season. Sorry to say, but they are going to stink. I'll still watch and root for them, but they really need to decide if they want to compete and make money or be the cheap a$$ team we have all come to love and loathe lately.

to me it doesn't make a lot of sense for the team to give that kind of dough to a closer, when the starting pitching is so bad. they should have spend that money elsewhere.

ps: pohlad needs to go!

Well, I'm happy we're keeping him. But talk about "not enough." This team still looks like a bottom dweller for the conceivable future -- especially if Liriano doesn't retain his old phenomenal form.
