A News Tribune newspaper carrier died Friday after slipping on a patch of ice two days before.
Robert Johnson was nearly finished with his morning deliveries in the Lakeside neighborhood on Jan. 31 when he slipped and fell, hitting the back of his head. Soon afterward he went into a coma and was rushed to the hospital. Two days later, after a heavy loss of blood, he died.
Carriers have been reporting slippery conditions lately, said Greg Switzer, a supervisor in the News Tribune’s circulation department. Johnson’s death, however, came as a shock.
“He was a good guy,” said Switzer, who said Johnson had been working with the paper for more than 20 years.
I worked with this man and went to his memorial service yesterday. Everyone at the DNT was shocked and saddened by this and a concerted effort is being made so that this will never happen again. The DNT has announced it will provide carriers (and Field Reps) with ice cleats free of charge.
This was a stupid accident and everyone who has done a route in snowy areas has probably boofed it more than once. I have fallen on ice and hit the back of my head, too. The only reason I'm still here is that it was frozen grass I bounced my head off and not something made of stone or iron.
It is also a lesson to homeowners. YOU NEED TO SAND YOUR SIDEWALKS AND STEPS!
